The City of Roanoke is seeking three law clerks to work with five (5) different Circuit Court Judges throughout the 23rd Judicial Circuit, which includes the City of Roanoke, City of Salem and the County of Roanoke. They will be required to travel among the three courthouses in the Circuit, as necessity requires, and handle a variety of tasks including conducting in-depth legal research using printed and computerized materials and the internet. They must be able to communicate professionally with lawyers and judges. They also must have strong legal research and writing skills; up-to-date computer research skills; and no criminal record. Must be a graduate of an accredited law school in the upper third of law school; and a member in good standing with the Virginia Bar or scheduled to take the Virginia Bar Exam in July 2027. These positions carry a one-year contract with a salary of $63,000.00, with a starting date of August 31, 2027, with limited benefits. Examples of Duties SUMMARY Provides legal services and support to Circuit Court Judges ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Provides support to five judges which includes the City of Roanoke, City of Salem and the County of Roanoke Assists in all aspects of legal research relating to defense or prosecution cases Provides in depth research and analysis to include perusing legal documents to verify facts and case law and assess related causes of action Compiles drafts of briefs for review and acceptance Prepares, files and delivers documents, petitions and pleadings including writing correspondence regarding cases and preparing related affidavits.
