Summer 2027 Law Clerk/Extern Voting Rights
About The Position
The Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) is seeking motivated and well-organized individuals to serve as law clerks or externs in their Voting Rights Program. TCRP is dedicated to building a culturally diverse and pluralistic team, and encourages applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. Law clerks and externs are integral to TCRP's work, assisting attorneys with all aspects of cases, including investigation, strategic planning, drafting complaints, discovery, motion practice, and trial preparation. This role offers valuable hands-on experience in civil rights law, allowing participants to contribute to meaningful projects with societal impact. Under attorney supervision, clerks/externs will conduct legal research, draft legal documents, and support advocacy efforts. Summer law clerks are expected to commit at least 400 hours (typically 10 weeks, 40 hours/week), while school-year externs typically average 15 hours/week for course credit. Both positions include a designated attorney mentor for weekly 1:1 meetings and guidance. The position is primarily remote within Texas, with the option to work from TCRP offices in Alamo, Austin, or Houston. TCRP operates under a hybrid work policy.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an accredited law school program.
- Strong academic record with a demonstrated interest in civil rights law.
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

- Self-reliant and motivated with exceptional written and oral communication skills.
Nice To Haves
- Previous experience or coursework in civil rights, constitutional law, or related fields is preferred but not required.
Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research on various civil rights issues.
- Assist with drafting legal memoranda, briefs, and other documents.
- Review and analyze case law, statutes, and regulations.
