About The Position

The J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University (BYU Law) is seeking an unpaid Law Affiliate Faculty member to teach a course on Patent Drafting and Prosecution. This role provides a practical, hands-on overview of the attorney's role in representing clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to secure a United States patent. Responsibilities include guiding students through case study exercises covering patentability advice, drafting patent application components (specification and claims), and preparing responses to Office Actions. The faculty member will not be required to attend department meetings but is expected to be available outside of class for questions. The teaching schedule is flexible and determined by the applicant's availability.

Requirements

  • JD required.
  • Required degree must be completed by the start date.
  • Must be an active member of the Utah Bar.
  • Knowledge of the topic.
  • Significant teaching experience.
  • Must relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of their employment.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a course on Patent Drafting and Prosecution.
  • Provide a practical, hands-on overview of the typical role an attorney plays in the representation of a client before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in securing a United States patent.
  • Involve a series of case study exercises designed to follow a series of events encountered when seeking patent protection, including advising a client as to the patentability of an invention; drafting various components of a patent application such as the specification and claims; and preparing and advocating responses to Office Actions issued by the USPTO.
  • Spend some time outside of class to address questions related to the class.
