The Laundry Machine Operator operates commercial-type laundry washers, extractors, tumblers, and conditioners. Work includes loading, unloading, and operating machine controls to wash, dye, starch, rough-dry, or condition textiles for pressing. The operator uses a range of commercial laundry equipment, including conventional washers and dryers, washer-extractors, continuous batch washers, tunnel systems and dryers, an overhead railing system, and a soil-sort system. Duties include handling soiled and clean linen through weighed carts or sorted bags; loading conventional washers by hand; selecting loads appropriate to machine capacity; and operating computer microprocessors and formula programs based on textile classification and degree of soiling. The operator inspects classified linen to ensure the selected process can remove stains, maintains records of productivity, chemical use, and incoming weight, and may train other operators in equipment procedures and washing formulas. The position also involves keeping employee uniforms separated and routing them to the appropriate use area, grouping patient apparel for proper routing, and operating conveyors that transfer dried items into carted slings and onto the overhead railing system for delivery to finishing. Other duties may be assigned. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., including holidays.
