About The Position

Under general supervision, performs duties related to laundry services according to established policies and procedures. Requirements

  • Ability to follow precise instructions for folding and counting correct number of pieces.
  • Knowledge of clothes and materials when working in the sewing area.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Clerical and numerical ability to maintain simple records, count inventory, and take orders for linen by telephone.
  • A minimum of one year sewing experience is required (sewing room only).
  • Physical ability to lift loads of wet or dry linen, push/pull linen racks and bins of soiled linen, and lift bundles.
  • Physical ability to visually inspect materials.
  • Physical ability to feed folding equipment and sewing machines.
  • Physical ability to use brooms, etc., to maintain work area in a clean and safe fashion.
  • Walking, standing, lifting (heavy & light loads), bending, and carrying/pushing.
  • Standing on safety ladders to reach uniforms and assemble linen carts.

Responsibilities

  • Assembles racks of clean linen and distributes to area clinics using linen baskets.
  • Takes orders for linen from unit personnel and by phone.
  • Picks up soiled linen from various hospital clinics using linen baskets.
  • Sorts linen into like categories for washing, using universal precautions.
  • Visually inspects clean linen for imperfections, folds it, and places it in proper racks for delivery.
  • Separates missed re-wash linen and folds patient linen for delivery.
  • Folds patient gowns, towels, isolation gowns, and under pads using an automatic folding machine.
  • Sorts and inspects surgical linen for damage, patches small holes, and refers irreparable items to the sewing room.
  • Folds surgical linen precisely and stocks shelves.
  • Assembles various types of kits and surgical packs with precise numbers of surgical linen.
  • Assembles exchange carts with specific linen orders for units.
  • Performs linen return and re-assembly calculations for user area carts.
  • Bags washed clothes and fitted sheets for user areas.
  • Feeds linen into mechanical spreaders and ironers, working in a team to process various items.
  • Stands at the cross-folding machine, receiving folded items, counting them, and assembling carts with accurate par.
  • Visually inspects items while feeding and folding, separating damaged items.
  • Mends and repairs items such as drapes, specialty sheets, collars, and slings.
  • Makes alterations for proper fit of uniforms.
  • Issues uniforms to hospital employees, ensuring correct size and fit.
  • Prepares name tapes or other identification markers for uniforms.
  • Keeps records of uniforms issued to employees.
  • Feeds lab coats and uniforms into the steam tunnel machine.
  • Sorts linen items being ragged out and keeps a count of items removed from the system.
  • Pins hems, sleeves, etc., in preparation for alterations.
