About The Position

The Johns Hopkins Police Department (JHPD) is seeking experienced, certified law enforcement officers for a Lateral Police Officer position. This role is open to current, retired, or previously certified police officers from full-service law enforcement agencies, either in Maryland or out-of-state. JHPD is committed to equitable police services, prioritizing community well-being and building trust through engagement. Officers will serve the Homewood, East Baltimore, and Peabody campuses, ensuring responsive, quality, and customer service-oriented policing. The position involves shift work and rotating days off, with a focus on 21st-century policing principles and fostering public trust. Work will be supervised daily by a Sergeant.

Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent legal resident of the United States who is an honorably discharged veteran with a pending application for U.S. citizenship.
  • Must provide official proof of separation from the military in good standing with an honorable discharge prior to a conditional offer of employment.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must demonstrate physical ability to perform the job.
  • Must possess and maintain a Valid Driver's License.
  • Successfully pass oral interviews.
  • If applicant has previous law enforcement experience, has no record of serious or repeated disciplinary actions or citizen complaints.
  • Finalists will be required to complete a comprehensive background check, including medical exam, drug test, polygraph, and psychological evaluation.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have current MPCTC certification or have been MPCTC certified within the last two (2) years and eligible for recertification, or satisfy Comparative Compliance standards.
  • Comparative Compliance applicants must provide academy curriculum, transcripts, and certificate of completion for review by MPTSC, including documentation of instructional hours and firearms training.
  • Training records must align with Maryland standards.
  • Must currently be in good standing with a full-service law enforcement agency or have separated in good standing within 5 years of application.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Maryland Police Training Commission recognized or approved Police Academy Training program and successful completion of a Police Field Training program.
  • Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Employees in this job classification will serve a one-year probationary period after successful completion of required training and certification.
  • Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission or other state through Comparative Compliance Training for lateral candidates.
  • Clery act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and will comply with Clery Act requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring community-oriented law enforcement services, patrols, and crime prevention to protect life and property.
  • Offering proactive support of student and staff initiatives.
  • Developing and maintaining positive rapport with students, faculty, staff, and surrounding neighborhoods.
  • Enforcing University policies and regulations, State laws and regulations.
  • Working in partnership with other university staff.
  • Representing JHPD's vision, mission, and values when interacting with university, community, and advocacy groups.
  • Coordinating JHPD resources and activities under supervision to address university and community issues.
  • Providing the full level of law enforcement work, enforcing laws, rules, and regulations governing safety and protection.
  • Performing problem-solving projects to enhance safety and prevent harm.
  • Ensuring priorities and community policing strategies for the patrol area are implemented.
  • Patrolling designated areas by vehicle, bicycle, and foot to identify safety hazards and violations.
  • Maintaining a visible presence to serve as a positive resource and build community relationships.
  • Responding to calls for assistance and emergency services, de-escalating situations, and ensuring community safety.
  • Coordinating and cooperating with Campus Safety and Security Command Staff on investigations.
  • Conducting investigations of incidents reported on the shift.
  • Coordinating preliminary investigative activities at crime scenes.
  • Interacting with the university community and establishing rapport with surrounding communities.
  • Directing traffic and assisting with crowd control.
  • Providing public safety information and conducting community safety programs.
  • Participating in specialized unit activities (e.g., crime prevention, investigations, special events).
  • Inspecting and maintaining assigned equipment and clothing.
  • Operating law enforcement equipment such as self-defense tools.
  • Performing or assisting in the collection and preservation of evidence.
  • Conducting or assisting with serving warrants and summonses.
  • Preparing cases for court and testifying when necessary.
  • Collaborating with local and state law enforcement agencies.
  • Performing office duties such as answering telephones, dispatching, issuing parking permits, and providing general information.
  • Maintaining visitor logs.

  • $15,000 INCREASE TO BASE SALARY AFTER SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF MARYLAND POLICE TRANING STANDARDS (MPTSC) TRAINING, FIELD TRAINING AND ALL OTHER REQUIREMENTS AS DEFINED BY MPTSC FOR RECERTIFICATION OF CURRENT MARLAND LAW ENFORCMENT CERTIFICATION.
  • 20% INCREASE OVER BASE SALARY FOR BALTIMORE CITY RESIDENTS.
