About The Position

This recruitment is for a Lateral Police Officer only. To qualify for lateral status, candidates must be currently Oregon DPSST certified as a police officer or currently certified by Washington state, Idaho, or California in an equivalent classification. Other laterals may be considered by the Chief. Additionally, the candidate must have at least 2 years of continuous employment within the last forty-seven (47) months. A lateral hire will be placed at the step equivalent to their years of DPSST or other accredited agency continuous certification, or at a step determined by the Chief for those laterals outside of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, or California. This position performs law enforcement and crime prevention duties including patrol and investigations. It enforces federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances. The role also assists in EMS, provides public assistance, and performs other duties as necessary for the proper functioning of the department. Officers must be willing to work 8, 10, or 12-hour shift assignments, including day shift, swing shift, or graveyard shift, and must be willing to work weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • Must be currently Oregon DPSST certified as a police officer or currently certified by Washington state, Idaho, or California in an equivalent classification.
  • Must have at least 2 years of continuous employment within the last forty-seven (47) months.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Possess a valid Oregon driver's license with an acceptable driving record (or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire).
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a US citizen or be able to obtain citizenship within 18 months after date of appointment.
  • Must pass a medical exam and psychological evaluation prior to appointment.
  • Must pass a physical agility test.
  • Vision must not be less than 20/20 in one or both eyes or corrected to not less than 20/20 in both eyes.
  • Must pass required background checks including work history, criminal history, and driving history.
  • Knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, ordinances, and resolutions as they apply to the Police and Emergency Dispatch departments.
  • Knowledge of modern principles, practices, and methods of law enforcement.
  • Knowledge and use of business English, grammar, spelling, punctuation and composition.
  • Ability to make reasonable and sound decisions in stressful situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior law enforcement and/or college degree in related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol streets, alleys, roads, business and residential areas of the City, enforcing parking, traffic and criminal laws and ordinances; checks suspicious persons and vehicles.
  • Respond to a wide variety of service and investigative calls, including but not limited to crimes, violations, juvenile complaints, family disputes, and barking dogs, and takes appropriate action.
  • Investigate accidents, deaths, and criminal complaints; makes arrests and issues citations and warnings when appropriate; handles prisoners as required by law.
  • Prepare full and comprehensive reports on activities performed.
  • Assist the public by answering inquiries regarding directions, laws and ordinances; aids stranded motorists; checks road conditions, street signs and street lights; gives other assistance to the public as needed.
  • Testify in court.
  • Serve warrants.
  • Provide miscellaneous field services; assist other officers, including communications and corrections, in their duties.
  • Make security checks on business and public buildings.
  • Interview witnesses and suspects, take photographs, collect evidence, process latent prints, roll fingerprints, and conduct follow-up investigations.
  • Direct traffic and generally provide traffic control at scenes of fires, parades, and other special events, malfunctioning traffic signals, motor vehicle collision scenes, etc.
  • Make recommendations to superior officers concerning departmental policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Maintain working liaison with other law enforcement agency personnel.
  • Perform animal and ordinance officer duties as needed or assigned.
  • Maintain assigned patrol vehicle and workstation in clean, orderly and working conditions.
  • Jointly responsible with all other employees for the overall cleanliness and order of the police facility.
  • Demonstrate consistent, regular and reliable work attendance of duties in various shifts and assignments.
  • Perform related work as required.
