About The Position

The Large Equipment Mechanic inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains A Tool Shed’s large rental-equipment fleet. The position helps keep equipment safe, reliable, and rental-ready, minimizes downtime, and supports timely service to customers and branch teams. The role requires sound judgment, strong troubleshooting skills, accurate documentation, and consistent attention to safety and quality.

Requirements

  • Prior experience repairing heavy, construction, agricultural, diesel, or comparable equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant hands-on experience.
  • Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read and use service manuals, diagrams, schematics, diagnostic information, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Ability to safely operate applicable equipment for inspection, diagnosis, and testing.
  • Ability to prioritize repairs, work independently within assigned authority, and seek guidance when needed.
  • Clear communication, accurate recordkeeping, attention to detail, and commitment to safe work practices.
  • A valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record under company standards when driving is an essential function of the assigned position, subject to applicable law.

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years of heavy-equipment or construction-equipment repair experience.
  • Equipment-rental industry experience.
  • Manufacturer, diesel, hydraulic, electrical, or heavy-equipment technical certifications.
  • Experience with computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain large construction and rental equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled services in accordance with company procedures and manufacturer guidance.
  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines; hydraulic, electrical, cooling, fuel, brake, and steering systems; and related mechanical components.
  • Service equipment that may include excavators, skid steers, backhoes, trenchers, loaders, aerial equipment, chippers, and other fleet assets.
  • Conduct thorough inspections and identify safety, mechanical, and maintenance concerns.
  • Remove or recommend removal of unsafe or non-operational equipment from rental service until appropriate repairs are completed.
  • Test equipment after repair to verify safe and proper operation.
  • Accurately document inspections, diagnosis, labor, parts used, repairs completed, and additional work needed.
  • Communicate equipment condition, estimated repair needs, delays, and significant concerns to management.
  • Use, maintain, and safeguard company tools, diagnostic equipment, and assigned assets.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop, yard, service vehicle, and work area.
  • Follow company safety procedures, equipment-specific requirements, and applicable workplace-safety rules.
  • Provide field service or job-site repairs when assigned and operationally necessary.
  • Work cooperatively with mechanics, service personnel, branch staff, and management; support branch operations during periods of high demand.
  • Perform other duties that are reasonably related to the position and assigned by management.
