About The Position

Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Coordinator of Large Animal Research. This position assists veterinarians with advanced technical procedures for reproductive management in both client owned animals and in approved funded research projects within the College of Veterinary Medicine. Flexible scheduling may be needed, depending on herd/research needs. Hours could range from 4:30AM – 7:30 PM, with most days being 7:00AM – 5:30PM. This position involves direct contact with animals susceptible to rabies. Employees in this role must complete a rabies pre-exposure vaccination series and maintain adequate rabies antibody titer (≥0.5 IU/mL) as recommended by CDC guidelines. Auburn University will cover the cost of the rabies vaccination series, periodic titer checks, and any necessary boosters.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or related field
2 years of experience in handling and managing large animals safely and working knowledge of large animal reproduction
Valid in state driver's license required upon hire

Responsibilities

Manages large animals for research and teaching needs, coordinates the animal use in compliance with IACUC guidelines.
Operates, maintains, repairs, and cleans laboratory, research facilities and equipment as well as maintains inventories for the laboratory and research areas.
Facilitates veterinary diagnostics and treatments in a safe manner by administering medications, routine vaccinations, and treatment according to prescribed instructions.
Assists with training laboratory animal caretakers and students regarding care of animals, preventative medicine practices, collection of specimens, and handling of animals.
Inspects facilities, equipment, and supplies daily as well as observes status of health of animals, environmental conditions, temperatures, and sanitation.
Assists researchers with examination, treatment, research, projects, surgery, restraint, sample collection in animals, and assists in emergency and critical care of patients.
Observes and records data, abnormal clinical signs, and collects and labels specimens.
Operates and maintains equipment such as loaders, skid steers, tractors, forklifts, etc. to facilitate the movement of heavy objects or animals.
Assists with the overall management and reproductive goals of teaching herds, including but not limited to, pasture management, rotational grazing, reproductive management.
Assists with teaching laboratories, animal demonstrations, tours of facilities, for veterinary students, undergraduate students, and summer education programs.
Maintains daily records of animals used for teaching, research, and outreach purposes, and assist with the researchers with the development and writing of regulatory protocols.
