About The Position

The purpose of the Language Specialist is to provide guidance and support within the branch and community regarding Métis language initiatives in the province of Ontario. This role will be engaged in addressing the most complex Métis language policy issues, dealing with abstract concepts and operationalizing them to develop programming that addresses political, economic, environmental, cultural, social, or demographic needs and opportunities. This person must be a fluent speaker of a Métis language dialect.

Requirements

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a specialized knowledge role
  • University Degree in Education, Indigenous Studies/Languages, Linguistics
  • Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
  • Fluent speaker and writer in a Métis language dialect
  • Significant knowledge of Métis and/or Indigenous policy issues related to Indigenous languages
  • Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
  • Advanced communications skills, both written and verbal, in a Métis language dialect
  • Must be able to translate English documents into a Métis language dialect.
  • Demonstrated ability to write high-quality evidence and data-based reports and professional presentations
  • Experience in forming working groups, committees and creating terms of reference
  • Demonstrated ability in policy and program development and evaluation

Responsibilities

  • Utilize specialized knowledge, education, and experience within Métis language dialects to meet program, Branch, and organizational needs.
  • Assist with language translation and creation of documents and reports specific to Métis languages (i.e., Michif, Bungi, Brayet, Métis English, Métis Saulteaux, Métis French, etc.).
  • Respond to the needs of internal and external clients as required.
  • Develop and recommend practices for new and existing policies, practices, or programs related to Métis language initiatives.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate reports, briefing notes, and presentations.
  • Present to senior management, PCMNO, funders, and government on local, provincial, and regional Métis language initiatives.
  • Promote, track, and measure compliance with program funding requirements by creating and implementing appropriate data collection, reporting, and/or recordkeeping processes specific to Métis language initiatives.
  • Assist with creating terms of reference and resources related to Métis language hubs and groups specific to Métis language speakers and writers.
  • Promotes the values of the organization within the workplace and in the community by demonstrating positive and professional relationships with others (employees, citizens, council, volunteers, advocates, etc.).
  • Reports all unsafe conditions, hazards or practices, accidents and incidents by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and adheres to all Health and Safety requirements within the MNO’s policies and procedures and provincial legislation.
  • Performs other job/branch-related duties as required.
