About The Position

Under limited supervision, plans and presents innovative, developmentally appropriate opportunities for students to learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to the development of students' academic abilities. This role involves teaching elementary content in both Spanish and English, integrating the teaching of content areas, and creating a classroom environment conducive to learning. The teacher will collaborate in the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of Spanish language and culture, understanding the core purposes and research behind the dual immersion program. Instruction will be conducted effectively and proficiently in Spanish and English, utilizing various techniques to facilitate comprehension and differentiate learning for all students. The position requires assessing student progress, working cooperatively with diverse students and parents, and maintaining accurate records. The teacher will also assist administration, supervise staff, maintain positive relationships with parents, manage classroom supplies, coordinate programs, and attend meetings and training. Operation of various office and classroom equipment is also required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in early childhood or elementary education, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Requires possession of a S.C. teacher certification.
  • Knowledge of immersion education, second language and literacy acquisition.
  • Requires high levels of bilingual proficiency an bi-literacy.
  • Requires a three year commitment to teach in the dual-language program.
  • Must be able to attend summer professional development and training sessions.
  • Must provide a brief demonstration during the interview process.
  • Proficiency in a second language- preferably Spanish due to the high incidence of Hispanic families in South Carolina.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics of data, people or things.
  • Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.
  • Ability to read a variety of curriculum standards, policies and procedures, technical and professional studies, reference books and publications, catalogs, handbooks, etc.
  • Ability to prepare curriculum plans, narrative and statistical reports, correspondence, etc., with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.
  • Ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, schedule or diagrammatic form, and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to apply influence systems in assisting classroom teachers, to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques, to make independent judgments in absence of supervision, and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

  • Ability to handle a variety of items including computer keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.
  • Minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
  • Ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
  • Must be able to hear and understand communications through a telephone.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment, including a computer, telephone, audio-visual equipment, vehicle, etc.
  • Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of five to ten pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Plans a program of study that meets the needs, interests and abilities of students.
  • Teaches elementary content in both Spanish and English and integrates the teaching of content areas.
  • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Plans and prepares lesson plans and related activities for individual students or assigned classes.
  • Collaborates in the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of Spanish language and culture.
  • Understands the core purposes of the dual immersion program and research behind the program’s effectiveness.
  • Conducts instruction effectively and proficiently in Spanish and English.
  • Uses context clues, manipulatives, realia, visuals, and student-centered instruction to facilitate comprehension in the target language.
  • Differentiates both content and language learning to ensure that all students successfully meet program assessments and outcomes.
  • Assesses student progress in a formative manner in oral and written language development, literacy and numeracy.
  • Works cooperatively with students and their parents who are culturally, racially and linguistically diverse.
  • Integrates and balances language and content learning agendas.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of students involved.
  • Grades work completed by students; maintains accurate records of test scores / grades.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and up-to-date records as required by law, District policy and administrative regulation.
  • Assists the school administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Monitors the activities/behavior of the student body as scheduled to ensure student safety and well-being.
  • Supervises the work of teaching assistants and/or volunteers.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents; schedules and conducts parent-teacher conferences; facilitates parent education workshops and conducts home visits as necessary.
  • Maintains inventory of classroom supplies and equipment; prepares supply requisitions as needed.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in special programs, projects or events as required; serves as adviser to student organizations, staffs and committees as appropriate.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on various staff committees as required.
  • Participates in staff in-service training and continuing education as required.
  • Makes arrangements for substitute instructors as needed.
  • Operates various types of machinery and equipment including a computer, printer, copier, laminating machine, fax machine, audio-visual equipment, tape player, various curriculum-specific equipment or instruments, etc.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly classroom.
  • Performs related duties as required.
