About The Position

The ASL Language Coach provides language acquisition, fluency development, and cultural immersion supports for interpreters. As a Deaf language model and cultural expert, the coach facilitates authentic language experiences that strengthen ASL proficiency, conversational competence, linguistic accuracy, and understanding of Deaf culture and community values. Must have evening availability. This position is telework-eligible within the state of Utah. Telework outside of the state of Utah is subject to review and approval by the University prior to a job offer being extended.

Requirements

  • Native or near-native ASL fluency.
  • Extensive knowledge of Deaf culture, community, and language practices.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching, coaching, mentoring, or facilitating ASL learning.
  • Ability to mentor and coach at advanced levels of ASL instruction.
  • Demonstration of performance assessment, evaluation, and feedback techniques.
  • Ability to provide supportive, constructive, and culturally informed feedback.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Conflict resolution and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Deaf and hearing team members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified as a Deaf Interpreter
  • Experience working with interpreters, interpreter training programs, or ASL instruction.
  • ASL teaching certification or recognized ASL instructional experience.
  • Experience developing language assessments or curriculum.
  • Knowledge of second-language acquisition principles and adult learning methods.

Responsibilities

  • Provide group ASL coaching sessions with ASL Interpreter Practitioners.
  • Assess language proficiency and identify developmental needs.
  • Facilitate structured and informal advanced ASL practice opportunities.
  • Support learners in improving vocabulary, grammar, depiction, classifiers, non-manual markers, and prosodic skills.
  • Model natural and authentic ASL usage.
  • Provide comprehensive, constructive feedback on recorded samples and simulated scenarios.
  • Provide language coaching for interpreter certification preparation and professional development.
  • Evaluate receptive and expressive ASL skills.
  • Provide constructive feedback regarding language production and comprehension.
  • Monitor learner progress and adjust coaching strategies as needed.
  • Recommend resources and learning activities to support continued improvement.
  • Facilitate discussions on Deaf culture, traditions, values, and community norms.
  • Promote respectful and culturally appropriate interactions with Deaf individuals.
  • Facilitate discussions on Deaf identity and lived experiences.
  • Encourage meaningful participation in Deaf community events and activities.
  • Maintain attendance records of sessions and participant progress.
  • Collaborate with team of mentors, coaches, and leadership.
  • Participate in program evaluation and improvement efforts.
