About The Position

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Solomons, Maryland seeks a Landscape & Grounds Technician in its Maintenance and Facilities department. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing comprehensive maintenance and semi-skilled technical work in the field of landscape maintenance, horticulture and landscape construction as well as repairs and maintenance to equipment, roadways and grounds. This position is considered essential and is non-exempt. The selected candidate will be required to review and accept the UMCES Principles of Conduct.

Requirements

  • A bachelor degree in horticulture or high school diploma and four years of landscape construction and maintenance work experience.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work in hazardous and confined environments and during adverse weather and temperature conditions.
  • Ability to understand, read and follow oral and written instructions and work orders.
  • Ability to read and interpret landscape plans, specifications and proposals.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the practices and techniques of landscape construction, agronomy, and/or landscape maintenance.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of plant life as applied to ornamental horticulture.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of plant materials, planting techniques, erosion control, and pesticides.
  • Working knowledge of landscape design and construction work.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting landscape architectural plans, specifications, proposal forms and estimates.
  • Skill in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to work from ladders and lifts.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 35 feet.
  • Ability to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather and temperature conditions.
  • Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performing comprehensive maintenance and semi-skilled technical work in the field of landscape maintenance, horticulture and landscape construction.
  • Performing repairs and maintenance to equipment, roadways and grounds.
  • Operating landscaping equipment such as mowers, snow removal equipment, sprayers and power and hand tools.
  • Ensuring equipment is maintained, operationally safe, properly stored and cleaned.
  • Inspecting and monitoring landscape conditions and making recommendations when issues arise.
  • Ensuring adequate supplies, materials and equipment are available for assigned projects.
  • Planning and programming assigned projects.
  • Organizing and leading the work of assigned personnel.
  • Making field investigations.
