About The Position

Under the direction of the Landscape Maintenance Worker Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and well-presented grounds and hardscape areas across the Boston campus through the removal of litter, leaves, and other organic debris. The Landscape Maintenance Worker performs a variety of landscaping projects, including excavation and grading for the installation and/or renovation of display beds, natural turf areas, and driveways. This role also includes cleaning roadways, walkways, and parking areas of debris, as well as removing trash daily to maintain a clean campus appearance and support a safe environment. Landscape Maintenance Workers are permanent members of the NU Snow Team involving the removal of snow and ice from university and adjoining areas including roadways, walkways, and steps and parking areas. This includes and is not limited to plowing, shoveling, salting, and sanding using University snow removal equipment as necessary to maintain safety of pedestrians and vehicles. Responsible for security of personal equipment, including tools, foul weather gear, boots gloves, etc. Responsible for the operation of the following equipment: powered sweeper, steam cleaner, bobcat and dump truck, and all other ground equipment including jack hammer, Air Knife/Spade, rotor tiller and chain saw. Use various tools and equipment including shovels, pick, broom, rack, and lawnmower, etc. Detect and report improper operation of facility equipment, defective materials and situations that require repair to supervisor. Follow prescribed safety rules and regulations. Perform other related duties as required or as directed.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of work experience in the field of arboriculture or a related field is required including all aspects of landscape installation and maintenance.
  • Thorough knowledge of turf maintenance techniques required.
  • Some experience in the construction and care of hardscape systems required.
  • Must be able to properly operate a variety of equipment and tools as described above in “Responsibilities.”
  • Must be quality-focused and able to communicate effectively with peers and customers, clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to follow directions and interact with a variety of people required.
  • Must have and maintain a valid U.S. State of Residence driver’s license and U.S. D.O.T. Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous manual labor, including frequent lifting/carrying/transporting loads up to 50 lbs.
  • Required to work in all weather conditions in all seasons and essential staff for weather-related emergencies impacting the grounds.
  • Must be able to work overtime during and weekends when needed.
  • Must have a valid Hydraulic License.
  • Must be able to pass a Grounds Maintenance Proficiency Test.

Nice To Haves

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator’s License within three (3) months of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Inspections (OPSI) 2A and 1C hoisting licenses within six (6) months of employment.
  • Ninety days after employment employees are required to become a member of Union Local 32BJ, District 615.
  • This position requires a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • The Landscape Maintenance Worker is considered Essential Personnel. This is a condition of employment.
  • This position is a 40-hour work week and must be able to work overtime during the week and on weekends when needed.
  • Permanent membership on the Snow Team is a requirement of this position.

  • Operating snow removal equipment such as plows, shovels, salt spreaders, and sanders.
  • Ensuring the security of personal equipment, including tools, foul weather gear, boots, and gloves.
  • Operating equipment including powered sweeper, steam cleaner, bobcat and dump truck, jack hammer, Air Knife/Spade, rotor tiller, and chain saw.
  • Using various tools and equipment including shovels, pick, broom, rack, and lawnmower.
  • Detecting and reporting improper operation of facility equipment, defective materials, and situations that require repair to supervisor.
  • Following prescribed safety rules and regulations.
  • Performing other related duties as required or as directed.
