About The Position

Under the general direction of the Assessment District Manager or full-time staff, the Part-Time Landscape Inspector assists with the inspection, administration, and execution of contract landscape maintenance district operations as assigned for quality of work, conformance to specifications, and safety. This person works under supervision and/or independently on tasks that require experience in landscape and/or irrigation maintenance. In addition, this position responds to public inquiries for service, and information, and for updating and maintaining the City's landscape e-feedback system caseload. Incumbents may not be assigned all related duties listed below and may be assigned duties that are not listed below. This position will not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year. This recruitment is open on a continuous basis and may close at any time, with or without notice.

Requirements

  • Graduate from High School and five years of experience in landscape maintenance and tree care, including direction of field personnel.
  • At least three years of experience in a supervisory/lead role in a commercial/institutional landscape management or design management environment.
  • Possession of appropriate California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to safely drive a City vehicle during all job duties is required.
  • Effective hearing and speaking abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • College level courses in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Agronomy, Landscape Irrigation Design or equivalent is highly desirable and may be submitted as experience.
  • Landscape design experience and skill (AutoCAD and GIS)
  • ISA Arborist Certification
  • Irrigation Association Certifications or equal
  • Backflow Testing Certification
  • Knowledge and ability in water management methods, irrigation controller programing, and central irrigation control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews landscape district projects, monitors and evaluates their condition, quality, appearance, and conformance to City standards and overall maintenance status.
  • Monitors the condition of the infrastructure and identifies elements that need to be replaced before failures lead to plant damage whenever possible.
  • Performs maintenance of landscape including but not limited to watering, trimming (shrubs and trees), clearing of weeds, and irrigation repairs.
  • Tests/tracks irrigation systems for proper function of all irrigation components and record information.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs sprinklers, underground lines, valves, track wires, and installs controllers.
  • Sets control clocks and monitors watering schedules.
  • Sprays chemicals for weed control.
  • Understands and complies with all regulatory agency requirements.
  • Meets with landscape district contractors to supervise work status, furnish verbal and written instructions, work orders, correction lists (punch lists), requests for extra work and repairs.
  • Review work items as completed by the contractor to verify work is complete.
  • Evaluates, responds to, and resolves from the public regarding concerns, inquiries, requests for service and information.
  • Maintains records of work accomplished, usually involving, but not limited to, landscape punch lists and e-feedback records, photographs, reports and email communications.
  • Review, track, and act on complaints and payment requests.
  • Consults with supervisors on matters pertaining to complex or politically sensitive issues, or where there is no precedence for action or resolutions.
  • Schedules, supervises and evaluates tree maintenance and removal operations within the landscape district.
  • Keep records of all trimming and removals for future reference and inquiries.
  • Monitors safety and traffic control by contractors
  • Reviews and approves proposals and processes invoices for payment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Overtime at the rate of one and one half times the hourly rate of the classification is paid for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week.
