About The Position

This role involves performing technical landscape architecture work and conceptual designs for various park, landscape, and environmental projects. The Landscape Designer will complete less complex park renewal projects from conceptual design through implementation, including construction drawings, cost estimates, contract administration, and construction supervision. The position works closely with the Landscape Architect to support park development and corporate projects, coordinating and managing contractors and supervising the construction of parks and trails. Field visits, site inspections, and warranty reviews will be conducted, along with assisting in information gathering, specification writing, and inventory of construction details. The role also includes participating in public engagement initiatives, developing park conceptual plans, master plans, and presentation drawings, and maintaining park and forestry inventory data. Grant applications and planting plans for gardens and tree planting programs will be prepared. The position coordinates and administers forestry and horticulture programs, including responding to inquiries, integrated pest management, and ecological restoration activities. It also coordinates forestry and horticulture events and assists with administrative functions for the horticulture program. Input will be provided for policy and procedure development, engineering design standards, and horticulture operations. Cost estimates will be prepared to support operational and capital budgets and asset management. The role requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, including outdoors.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Landscape Design / Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Arboriculture, Civil Engineering, Ecological Restoration, or related field or related professional certifications
  • 2 years of related experience in landscape design, forestry or horticultural environment
  • Experience in the planning and facilitation of community information sessions and workshops relating to park design, forestry and horticulture
  • Demonstrated knowledge of landscape design principles and practices, landscape construction methods, materials, and applications
  • Demonstrated experience managing contractors on construction, park or trail projects
  • Technical experience working in a landscape, forestry, or an ecological restoration setting
  • Possess an understanding of horticultural practices, forestry management, ecological restoration, and invasive species management
  • Understanding of municipal park, cemetery, and open space planning and development practices
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD for the creation of design drawings and plans
  • Experience with GIS software for data input and record management
  • Hands on horticultural knowledge and the ability to prepare planting plans with knowledge of trail types and design specifications
  • Effective communication skills with a focus on customer service
  • Valid Class G driver’s licence with an acceptable driver’s abstract
  • An acceptable criminal background check

Responsibilities

  • Prepares planting plans for gardens, boulevard and park tree planting program.
  • Coordinates and administers forestry and horticulture programs, including responding to inquiries, coordinating and integrated pest management and ecological restoration activities
  • Coordinates forestry and horticulture events such as volunteer tree planting days, ecological restoration, Communities in Bloom, Bee City events
  • Assists with administrative functions for the horticulture program including but not limited to program planning, ordering supplies
  • Provides input for policy and procedure development, engineering design standards and horticulture operations
  • Prepares cost estimates to support the operational and capital budgets and asset management
