About The Position

To perform a wide variety of landscape maintenance functions related to but not limited to mowing, trimming, irrigation, edging, pruning landscape install, and snow removal (in snow markets). This role involves working in various landscaping settings, communicating progress of tasks, learning aspects of installation work, performing basic planting skills, pruning trees, shrubs, and vines, identifying plants, weeds, and pests, understanding basic irrigation repairs, operating landscape maintenance and construction hand tools and light equipment, reporting equipment in need of repair, and practicing safety in all work circumstances. The role also requires a neat and clean appearance, professional conduct, and wearing company uniforms. Specific duties are categorized under Mowing, Pruning, Bed Care, Landscape Installation, Fertilization, Irrigation, Cleaning, and Snow Removal.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and meet all applicable state-mandated labor laws.
  • 1-year experience in the landscape industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of Mainscape Standards of Excellence.
  • Ability to comprehend instructions.
  • Ability to use assigned tools and equipment in a proper and safe manner.
  • Become proficient in the use of basic maintenance hand tools: leaf rake, broom, hoe, shovel, cultivator, water hose, quick coupler key, hand pruners, hedge shears, and refuse tote.
  • Become proficient in the use of basic power equipment used for landscape maintenance: hedge trimmers, line trimmers, 21" lawn mower, and leaf blower.
  • Learn and perform basic planting skills.
  • Assist in keeping the job site tidy/safe.
  • Become proficient in loading and unloading of truck and trailer used in landscape maintenance operations.
  • Perform regular safety inspections on vehicle and trailer.
  • Adhere to company policies, standards, and safety guidelines.
  • Work with other employees as a team.
  • Meet or exceed company production rates and standards.
  • Ability to communicate with lead people regarding progress of tasks.
  • Regularly required to have full range of mobility in upper and lower body for stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling, squatting, and walking for extended periods.
  • Able to reach over head with hands and arms; climb or balance.
  • Able to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Able to lift, pull, and push materials and equipment.
  • Able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Maintain physical fitness level necessary to complete assigned job tasks.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of landscape maintenance functions including mowing, trimming, irrigation, edging, pruning, landscape installation, and snow removal.
  • Work in and around various landscaping settings, including direct contact with plant and landscaping materials.
  • Communicate with lead people regarding the progress of tasks.
  • Learn aspects of installation work and assist where needed or assigned.
  • Learn and perform basic planting skills.
  • Prune trees, shrubs, and vines to encourage healthy growth.
  • Identify by common names 25 frequently used plants, 5 frequently seen weeds, and 5 frequently seen garden pests.
  • Differentiate weed grasses from desirable turf grasses.
  • Understand and complete basic irrigation repairs such as sprinkler head replacement and arc/radius adjustment, and lateral line repairs.
  • Operate landscape maintenance and construction hand tools and light equipment.
  • Report equipment in need of repair and identify broken, poorly running, and misused equipment.
  • Understand and practice safety in all work circumstances and wear appropriate PPE at all times.
  • Maintain a neat and clean appearance and conduct yourself in a professional manner.
  • Wear company uniforms (hats, shirt, pants, and jackets).
  • Operate various types of mowers (push, walk-behind with Velke, zero-turn riding mowers).
  • Operate string trimmers, blowers, edgers, and perform trash/debris pickup.
  • Properly set up and disperse crew members on a job site.
  • Use ladders, gas-powered hedge trimmers, loppers/hand pruners, and chainsaws for pruning.
  • Recognize plants that need special pruning needs/times.
  • Properly apply pre-emergent, selective, and non-selective herbicides.
  • Identify desirable plants from weeds in a specific area.
  • Pull and spray weeds, and mix chemicals.
  • Safely lift and move heavy items for landscape installation.
  • Install plants properly.
  • Apply granular fertilizers after proper training under supervision.
  • Understand proper sequence of landscape installation.
  • Identify, water, and fertilize annual flowers.
  • Check plants for insects/diseases.
  • Perform loading and fill procedures for installation.
  • Use and calibrate the Z-cart for fertilization.
  • Apply herbicides, fungicide, and insecticide.
  • Replace irrigation heads/nozzles.
  • Dig and clear drain/irrigation trenches.
  • Work with solvents and glues for irrigation systems.
  • Track wires and perform problem-solving for irrigation systems.
  • Use trenching equipment properly.
  • Safely use cleaning supplies and solvents.
  • Safely use snow removal equipment.
  • Understand safe driving techniques in snow and ice conditions.
  • Wear appropriate clothing for prolonged exposure to weather conditions during snow removal.
  • Shovel snow, lifting up to 25 pounds.
