About The Position

As a Landscape Architect I, you will contribute to the design and delivery of open space and park projects within the Open Space Planning & Design section. Working alongside Landscape Architect IIs and under the direction of the Senior Landscape Architect, you will provide specialized design expertise to ensure projects meet City Standards and align with strategic priorities. This role participates across the full project lifecycle—from initial concept development and detailed drawing packages to site inspections and project administration.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Landscape Architecture
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a landscape designer in the public or private sector
  • Current registration, or eligibility for membership, as an Intern with the Alberta Association of Landscape Architects
  • Strong technical abilities in the field of landscape architecture, including considerable knowledge of applicable policies, standards, and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to use verbal and written communication skills to build strong consensus among consultants, contractors, the general public, and other City staff
  • Strong analytical abilities, utilizing critical thinking for effective problem-solving and solution development
  • Ability to conduct site analysis research and design open space site plans of low-to-moderate complexity under professional supervision
  • Considerable skill in developing and presenting comprehensive design, plans, and reports
  • Ability to cultivate productive working relationships with colleagues, industry, and business partners
  • Capacity to contextualize project goals, develop corresponding outcomes, and drive their full implementation

  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) or higher
  • Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with Adobe Creative Cloud applications alongside drafting tools like AutoCAD and Civil3D
  • Familiarity with City of Edmonton design standards, guidelines, and bylaws (e.g., Winter City Design Guidelines, Breathe, Access Design Guide)
  • Experience working with Google Applications, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and AutoCAD

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized expertise, recommendations, and guidance to meet City Standards under the direction of a Landscape Architect II
  • Directly prepare landscape concept plans, detailed drawing packages, specifications, and cost estimates for open space projects
  • Refine designs and provide revision direction to technical staff
  • Participate in site inspections during construction for substantial performance and completion, reporting any variances, alterations, or deficiencies to the project manager
  • Assist in budget preparation and monitor expenditures to stay within allotted amounts
  • Assist project leads to manage, monitor, and report on project milestones through detailed plans and schedules, ensuring projects are on budget, on schedule, and within scope
  • Conduct and participate in meetings with internal teams and external collaborators (e.g., consultants, contractors, community groups)
  • Provide professional landscape architectural input and review for the development of strategic policy related to parks and open space service delivery
  • Support City-wide initiatives and other City Planning Branch Priorities that relate to parks and open space
  • Continually work to improve processes and develop best practices within the Open Space Planning & Design section
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
