About The Position

The City of Birmingham is seeking a qualified Landfill Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of the landfill. This position is responsible for monitoring all areas of the facility, including the scale house, public unloading areas, working face, road maintenance, dirt hauling, and security. The Landfill Supervisor ensures the safe disposal of refuse, oversees environmental monitoring activities, and maintains compliance with applicable regulations and operational policies. Working under general supervision, the incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment in managing facility operations, coordinating staff and resources, resolving issues, and keeping management informed of significant matters. Work is evaluated through inspections, reports, and overall operational results.

Requirements

  • Class B CDL.
  • Minimum of five years working within a landfill in order to obtain a Landfill Operator's Certificate from SWANA.
  • Experience ensuring compliance with EPA and ADEM guidelines (e.g., understanding types of specific waste permitted for landfills).
  • Experience reading/interpreting development plans, blueprints, and/or topographic maps.
  • Experience working with and around heavy and construction equipment used in landfills.

Responsibilities

  • Performs various administrative/professional duties to include compiling documentation, report writing, maintaining inventory, and maintaining certifications by following policies, procedures and guidelines in order to remain in compliance with federal, state and local solid waste regulations, (e.g., EPA, ADEM, and Jefferson Co. Health Dept.).
  • Oversees the daily operations of the landfill including work performed in the scale house, public unloading areas, the working face, road maintenance operations, dirt hauling operations, security/access control, etc. through observation and direction of work being performed to ensure work is completed according to compliance standards (e.g., EPA, ADEM, Jefferson County Department of Health).
  • Monitors environmental impacts of New Georgia Landfill and Eastern Area Landfill including methane gas emissions, ground water, surface water, etc. By utilizing observation and various measurements to ensure compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws (EPA, ADEM, and Jefferson Co. Health Dept.).
  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
