About The Position

The City of Glendale's Field Operations Department provides essential services that directly impact the community and provide support to other departments within the city. The Field Operations Department is made up of four separate divisions that include Solid Waste Management, Equipment Management, Facilities Management, and the Landfill. The Landfill Service Worker performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work at the City's landfill. This position is: FLSA non-exempt, and will earn overtime for any hours worked over 40 in a week. A Grade 311 with with an hourly salary between $21.5625 - $32.3438. The City of Glendale offers a generous benefits package with competitive rates that become effective the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment. The City of Glendale also offers Regular status positions the following: 10.5 paid holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays. Vacation leave accrues at: 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours/17.25 days per year), increases to 6.12 hours per pay period after 5 years, then caps out at 7.6 hours per pay period after 10 years of service. Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours/14.25 days per year). Days per year estimates are based on an 8-hour work day. This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contribution is mandatory, and deducted every pay period. The current contribution rate is 11.98%. Requirements

• One year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.
• Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
• One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.
• Knowledge of: Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment
• Knowledge of: Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned areas of responsibility
• Knowledge of: Hazard, safety rules, precautions related to equipment operation
• Knowledge of: Traffic laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as they relate to equipment operation
• Knowledge of: Street layouts and routes
• Knowledge of: Confined space entry procedures.
• Ability to: Read and understand blue prints, technical diagrams, and maps
• Ability to: Barricade work sites according to the Phoenix barricade manual
• Ability to: Understand and follow safe working practices
• Ability to: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

• This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy.
• A post-offer physical assessment is required.
• Valid Arizona class D driver license.
• Valid Commercial Driver's License with endorsements is required for some positions and some positions require the ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance and repair work, such as repairing streets, laying concrete, carpentry, painting, plumbing, landscaping, and repair of specialized equipment.
• Operates various light, medium, and heavy equipment including brush tractors, dump trucks, mowing and sweeping equipment, trucks, truck with trailers, and Fire vehicles.
• May provide general direction to other employees and volunteers.
• Uses various hand and power tools to accomplish tasks.
• Explains and enforces rules and regulations pertaining to safety, barricading, direction of traffic, hazardous materials, and operation of equipment.
• Notifies residents and businesses of work being performed; answers questions from citizens.
• Maintains daily work records; may perform some computerized data entry work.
• Transports and sets up supplies and equipment; makes required safety checks.
• May act as a lead worker with ASPEN inmates.
• Operates city vehicles; depending on area of assignment may operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Prepares cover products and applies to landfill face and slopes.
• Controls dust by spraying water to roadways from water truck.
• Transports fuel to heavy equipment via fuel truck.
• Operates Water Truck and Waterpull.
• Assists weigh scale operator.
• Directs waste haulers to dumping locations, and monitors wastes for non-acceptable materials.
