About The Position

Johnston County Landfill is currently seeking a responsible individual to oversee preventative maintenance, repairs, and ensure the efficient operation of our equipment and vehicles. As a landfill Equipment Technician, you will be responsible for preventative maintenance and repairs on bulldozers, track loaders, trash compactors, excavators, off road trucks, motor grader, pan, vibratory roller, farm tractors, mowing equipment, and other related mechanical devices. THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of a variety of tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and landfill related equipment.
  • Good knowledge of the techniques and methods involved in troubleshooting and solving mechanical difficulties.
  • Ability to read and interpret a variety of equipment service manuals and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and a variety of support vehicles.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to assigned duties.
  • Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate heavy equipment and support vehicles in a safe manner to perform repairs, read gauges, and make written records.
  • Ability to read and write and considerable experience with heavy equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Mechanical experience working with automobiles and trucks.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic computer skills such as ordering parts and supplies online from vendors, operating maintenance software, using e-mail, & e-learning skills preferred.
  • Prefer candidates with experience operating heavy equipment.
  • CDL preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Preventative maintenance and repairs on highway trucks, pick-up trucks, and trailers.
  • Operate a service truck on and off site to perform equipment refueling, daily maintenance, and other mechanic duties.
  • Keeping the shop area and service vehicles clean.
  • Operating and maintaining various types of heavy equipment, including front loader trucks, forklifts, roll-off trucks, and garbage trucks.
  • Repairing pumps, motors, hydraulic systems, electric systems, waste containers and other apparatus equipment related to landfill operations.
  • Performing welding, cutting, and fabrication.
  • Performing related and other duties as assigned.
