About The Position

The Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) supports professional land surveying projects through a combination of field surveying, survey computations, data processing, drafting, research, and project coordination. The successful candidate may have already passed the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination or must be willing to work toward passing the FS examination and ultimately obtaining Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensure in Alaska. The position requires a developing understanding of surveying principles and the ability to apply those principles to boundary, topographic, construction, and as-built surveys under the responsible charge of a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS). This position requires a combination of office and field survey work. The employee must be capable and willing to travel to remote and urban project locations and spend extended periods in the field performing survey work as project needs require. Work elements further define the expectations associated with this role. The employee is expected to progressively assume greater responsibility for survey calculations, field and office assignments, project coordination, and preparation of survey deliverables while developing the knowledge and experience necessary to progress toward Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensure. Requirements

• Education and/or experience in surveying, geomatics, engineering, engineering technology, construction, or a related field that supports development toward a professional land surveying career. A bachelor’s degree is not required.
• Demonstrated interest in pursuing land surveying as a professional career and willingness to work toward passing the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination if not already completed.
• Working knowledge of survey principles, techniques, computations, and modern survey equipment, or demonstrated ability and willingness to develop these skills.
• Experience with or willingness to learn AutoCAD Civil 3D, survey data processing software, and Microsoft Office products.
• Valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

• Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
• Previous land surveying or construction surveying experience.
• Experience with Alaska surveying, boundary surveys, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Alaska Native Corporations.
• FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate for operation of small, unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), or willingness to obtain the certificate.
• Experience with UAS/drone-based aerial mapping, photogrammetry, or survey data collection.
• Demonstrated commitment to progressing toward Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensure.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning and execution of survey projects, including boundary, topographic, construction, and as-built surveys.
• Perform field surveying independently or as part of a survey crew and provide field leadership when assigned.
• Travel to project sites throughout Alaska and other locations as required, including assignments requiring overnight stays and extended periods away from the normal duty station.
• Work independently or as part of a survey crew in remote locations and varying weather and terrain conditions.
• Operate and maintain survey equipment such as GNSS/GPS receivers, robotic total stations, levels, and data collectors.
• Perform survey computations, data reduction, coordinate geometry, adjustments, and quality-control checks.
• Interpret engineering plans, construction drawings, plats, records of survey, legal descriptions, deeds, and other property records.
• Process field data and prepare survey drawings, exhibits, maps, plats, and other deliverables using AutoCAD Civil 3D and survey software.
• Research survey records, property information, rights-of-way, easements, and other information needed to support boundary and design surveys.
• Coordinate with Professional Land Surveyors, project managers, engineers, construction personnel, clients, and field staff to meet project requirements.
• Maintain accurate field notes, electronic data, calculations, project records, and documentation.
• Assist with estimating and development of scopes, schedules, and level-of-effort for survey work.
• Assist with UAS/drone survey and mapping operations when qualified and develop UAS capabilities consistent with project needs and applicable requirements.
• Ensure compliance with Bristol safety policies, survey standards, project requirements, and applicable professional standards.
