About The Position

The position of Lactation Consultant is a Registered Nurse who is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the health of the breastfeeding family for both in-patients and out-patients and to provide education to patients, families, nursing and medical staff and the community. This position also requires maintaining a current, strong knowledge base through clinical and educational activities and must hold a current certification through the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLCE). The Lactation Consultant interfaces with all areas caring for the breastfeeding family, community resources and local/national lactation organizations. The Lactation Consultant is a liaison between the hospital staff and administration, and the expectant parent/family. The Lactation Consultant functions in a multifaceted role that demonstrates professionalism and promotes excellence in the practice of nursing. The Lactation Consultant is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week and on holidays and is responsible for maintaining high standards for a caseload of patients as described by the scope of care for the area of practice and demonstrates appropriate actions based on sound scientific principles. The Lactation Consultant also coordinates and directs care delivered by the ancillary staff. The Lactation Consultant is accountable for compliance with the Ohio Nurse Practice Act, applicable regulatory standards, and institutional policies and procedures. The Lactation Consultant directly/indirectly impacts the patient outcomes and care provided to patients/families/significant others.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Valid Ohio RN license
  • Current CPR certification required at the time of hire
  • Current IBCLC certification
  • 1 - 3 years of job-related experience
  • At least 1-2 years of peri-natal clinical or educational experience
