About The Position

Responsible for developing and implementing educational programs based on breastfeeding and provide professional nursing care for the breastfeeding mothers. Maintains lactation support for breastfeeding mothers after discharge.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree and current RN license in the state of South Carolina.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification required.
  • At least 1 year of work experience in area of licensure is required.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Some clinical or hospital experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience practicing as an IBCLC in a high-volume Baby Friendly designated hospital is preferred.
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification is preferred, however if not certified IBCLC must be obtained within one year of hire and must be maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches patients about breastfeeding and assesses patients’ technique for breastfeeding offering encouragement and support taking into consideration their physical, psycho-social, environmental and spiritual needs.
  • Evaluates outcomes of patient teaching, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as necessary to obtain optimal patient care.
  • Maintains appropriate patient documentation, records and charts to insure an accurate record of the patients’ medical treatment. Maintains confidentiality.
  • Using the interdisciplinary approach formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning including family teaching as appropriate.
  • Maintains “Warm Line” for breastfeeding help after discharge.
  • Provides in-service education for staff re breastfeeding practices.
  • Performs other miscellaneous and related duties as assigned by the director of nursing.
