About The Position

At Catholic Health, our primary focus is the way we treat and serve our communities. We work collaboratively to provide compassionate care and utilize evidence-based practice to improve outcomes – to every patient, every time. Our Lactation Consultant provides lactation management services and support to expectant and new parents. They partner with an interdisciplinary team including, but not limited to, the Director of Maternal-Child Nursing, attending physicians, Registered Nurses (RNs), and ancillary staff to facilitate and manage a variety of lactation/maternity patient education programs and development of future programs. The consultant collaborates with staff RNs to achieve maximum breastfeeding outcomes, identifies expected breastfeeding outcomes which are measurable, realistic and attainable in relation to resources available, and teaches prenatal breastfeeding classes to expectant parents and participates in community outreach classes. They provide evidence-based education to maternity staff to reinforce and update knowledge and skill regarding the lactation process, and adhere to Baby-Friendly, USA, NYSDOH and IBCLC breastfeeding “best practices” and assures that they are implemented by all staff. The consultant facilitates a breastfeeding support group for breastfeeding women in the community, participates in meetings of the Association of Lactation Providers of Suffolk and Nassau counties, and performs performance improvement activities related to breastfeeding indicators including analysis of data and implementing/evaluating process improvement programs. They act as a support person for the nursing staff, patients, and families of the L&D, NICU and Maternity Units, and advocate for and build meaningful relationships with patients and their loved ones through safety intervention, emotional support, and education. Additionally, they review, revise, and develop maternal-child department policies and procedures relating to the breastfeeding program.

Requirements

  • 3-5 Years of experience working in Maternal-Child Health Nursing
  • 5+ Years of experience in lactation consulting required
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing or related field preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree required
  • New York Registered Nurse (RN) License & Registration strongly preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) & International Board Certified Lactation Certification (IBCLC) required
