About The Position

The Lactation Consultant - PRN position at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, within the Lactation Services Department, is a part-time role with no set hours per week, designated as PRN for the Birth Center and NICU. The role involves providing consultation to mothers to promote optimal breastfeeding outcomes, educating staff on complex breastfeeding management, collaborating with the interdisciplinary care team, maintaining breastfeeding statistics, and developing policies and procedures for lactation services. The position requires strong counseling and communication skills, as well as the ability to develop educational programs and maintain effective relationships with medical staff and the public. The work environment may involve exposure to infectious diseases and stressful conditions with frequent interruptions.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college/university with Bachelor's degree in Administration, Nutrition, or Nursing.
  • Current IBCLC certification or eligible to sit for exam. If not currently certified, must apply to sit for the exam at the next scheduled application date.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Demonstrates ability to successfully counsel and assist mothers with breastfeeding skills
  • Ability to develop educational programs for families and staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with medical and nursing staff, employees and the public

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a neonatal intensive care or pediatric unit as an IBCLC preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides consultation in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to mothers of patients in the management of breastfeeding to promote optimal patient outcomes.
  • Educates staff and complex breastfeeding management.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary care team in monitoring breastfeeding progress of mothers and modifying the plan of care to promote optimal outcomes.
  • Maintains breastfeeding statistics for Brenner Children's Hospital.
  • Develops policies and procedures as needed for Lactation Consultant services, breastfeeding equipment and resources and participates in performance and quality improvement activities and outcomes projects.
