About The Position

Provides preventive prenatal and postpartum instruction; identifies early signs of breastfeeding difficulties and suggests appropriate options to parents and medical staff. The lactation consultant may provide prenatal and postnatal breastfeeding classes, private consultations, home visits, assistance in the hospital, inservice education to health professionals, training for students (nurses, dietitians, and physicians), telephone counseling for mothers, breast pump rentals and other devices, and educational materials and literature. Other duties as assigned from time to time.

Requirements

  • Current California RN license required.
  • Current BLS and NRP certification required.
  • Certificate in Lactation Consultation required.
  • A working knowledge of: Anatomy of the breast and physiology of lactation, Newborn anatomy and physiology, Behavioral sciences, Developmental stages of infant growth, Biochemical properties and immunological aspects of human milk, Nutrition, Pathology, Pharmacology and human milk, Development of human attachment, Effect of environmental toxins, Professional ethics.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous clinical experience in a patient care setting preferred with successful completion of orientation and training to the point of competence.

Responsibilities

  • Cooperate with other health workers in maintaining frequent and regular communication with the breastfeeding mother.
  • Confers with mothers and assesses the progress of breastfeeding and may recommend alternatives that will improve its quality and increase its duration.
  • Assists in the prevention and management of engorgement.
  • Assists in the prevention and management of sore nipples.
  • Assists in the promotion of ample milk supply.
  • Assists in breastfeeding the infant with slow weight gain or failure to thrive; when the infant is jaundiced; more than one infant (twins, triplets, tandem); the premature infant; when mother and infant are separated (hospitalization, employment, school); in the presence of food intolerance and/or allergy; the infant with special needs.
  • Assists with suck difficulties that interfere with breastfeeding.
  • Instructs mothers in the appropriate use of breastfeeding devices.
