About The Position

The Registered Nurse Lactation Consultant's main clinical focus is assisting mothers and babies to breastfeed successfully. The Lactation Consultant is a licensed health professional who has obtained International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners certification (IBCLC) and is currently licensed as a Registered Nurse. This position is a Full-Time, benefited position, scheduled 64 hours per bi-weekly pay period on the evening shift supporting our Postpartum Unit and NICU. The RN Lactation Consultant functions as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team as a counselor, educator, and mentor to nurses, patients, and their families. Supervision and evaluations are received from the Clinical Nurse Manager for the Mother/Baby unit or designee. Provides direct patient support and teaching to patients, including those experiencing complex lactation problems. Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises an individualized plan of care for the breastfeeding family, while actively involving them in the plan of care. Utilizes the Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital breastfeeding policy when caring for breastfeeding families. Helps to revise the policy in collaboration with the Breastfeeding Advisory Board (BAB) as needed and teaches others about following the policy. Identifies patient and family education needs. Collaborates with BAB to help develop and revise patient education materials for breastfeeding. Teaches families according to these approved materials to ensure consistency of information. Provides and identifies additional resources as needed related to breastfeeding plan to assure readiness for discharge.

Requirements

  • Requires bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Requires current Michigan Nursing License
  • International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant IBCLC
  • Completes all mandatory in-services that apply to the role of the lactation consultant.
  • Must follow IBCLE guidelines for continuing education to maintain IBCLC certification.
