About The Position

The City of Markham is seeking a Labourer/Driver for the Operations Department. This role involves performing manual labor, typically as part of a crew, and operating light and heavy-duty vehicles, equipment, and tools for road maintenance and repair work. The position requires operating various equipment such as dump trucks, tractors, loaders, plow and wing combination units, and hand tools for tasks including debris and garbage pick-up, grass cutting, asphalt/gravel patching, catch basin repair, sod repair, fencing, traffic control, and winter control operations (snow plowing, sanding, salting). The role also includes providing back-up support to other Operations Labourer/Drivers and contributing to a positive, productive, healthy, safe, and respectful work environment with a focus on customer service excellence. Overtime, shift work, and rotational standby are required.

Requirements

High School Graduate or equivalent plus roads maintenance courses.
Demonstrated experience in and working knowledge of roads maintenance, preferably in an urban growth environment.
Experience operating a range of light and heavy duty vehicles/equipment and hand tools.
Experience with Winter Control operations.
Knowledge of Minimum Maintenance Standards.
Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance & inspections on a full range of vehicles, equipment & tools.
Excellent work habits; good judgment; dependability; reliability; customer service attitude; time management, problem solving and record keeping skills.
Valid DZ license and maintenance of Ontario Class DZ Driver's license required.
Satisfactory driver’s abstract (No demerit points plus no more than 2 infractions - max of one moving and one non-moving conviction).
Must be physically able to perform the bona fide duties of the job including heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

Demonstrated skill in the operation of tandem and single axle dump trucks.
Demonstrated skill in the operation of plow & wing combination units and spreader control devices for winter maintenance.
Demonstrated skill in the operation of large articulated loaders.
Demonstrated skill in the operation of 5-tonne or larger crane and boom truck.

Responsibilities

Perform manual labour as part of a crew.
Operate light and heavy duty vehicles/equipment and accessories/hand tools for roads maintenance/repair work.
Perform debris and garbage pick-up.
Perform grass cutting.
Perform asphalt/gravel patching.
Perform catch basin repair.
Perform sod repair and fencing.
Perform traffic control and safety device installation/maintenance.
Conduct Winter Control operations including snow plowing/removal, sanding/salting, hand-shoveling, and debris removal.
Ensure compliance with Division standards and Health & Safety policies and procedures.
Provide back-up support to other Operations Labourer/Drivers.
Contribute to a positive, productive, healthy/safe and respectful work environment.
Foster and model customer-service excellence.
