About The Position

UBC Building Operations provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. The Municipal Services group is responsible for providing waste management services, soft and hard landscape services, as well as moving and general labour services for all of the Vancouver campus. This position works in the Waste Management division of Municipal Services, which provides both waste management services and waste reduction education to the UBC campus community through the coordination of recycling, composting and litter reduction initiatives. Waste Management supports special events on campus, helps to coordinate the redistribution of surplus office materials, and provides other important services such as paper shredding, compost consulting and special items recycling. Within the Waste Management crew, the Labourer performs physical work, operates special equipment, performs maintenance work for the Waste Management crew; working within relevant safety regulations and in the safest, simplest, sustainable and most efficient manner. Positions in this classification perform skilled tasks related to road and utility infrastructure preventative maintenance works, landscaping and turf management, moving and event services, waste management and building maintenance, support project work and operate vehicles within the required class and special equipment.

Requirements

  • Secondary school education and/or completion of high school
  • Valid BC driver’s license or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operates vehicles within the required class and special construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Required to work in severe weather conditions, may be exposed to odors, loud noises, or other environmental factors.
  • Required to work in confined spaces and at elevated locations while complying with WorkSafeBC regulations, UBC policies and procedures.
  • Requests and receives tools, equipment and material for the work assigned.
  • Assists in performing regulatory asset inspections, condition assessments, and reporting using asset management hardware and software.
  • Required to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
  • Loads, unloads, receives and dispatches cargo and maintains associated records.
  • Carries out routine maintenance on the vehicle being operated.
  • May monitor the work of a group of Labourers in an assigned area as designated by their supervisor; participates in the work and ensures those under their jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
  • May require certifications for work assignments including but not limited to confined space entry, lockouts, fall protection, traffic control, asbestos abatement, driving or other specified certifications based on the requirements of their assignment.
  • Determines the most efficient and effective way to perform skilled tasks and operate equipment; incorrect decisions result in minor delays.
  • Works under general supervision and from oral and written instructions and according to established procedures.
  • Monitors the work of a group of labourers in an assigned area as required.
  • Will assist onboard new employees, train or guide the work of seasonal labourers.
