About The Position

The laborer performs manual labor to assist with the maintenance of city-owned resources including utilities, streets, facilities, and collection systems of the wastewater treatment plant.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of material commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities as related to assigned areas.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to work being done.
  • Knowledge of the utilization, maintenance, and care of materials and equipment used.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to work a non-standard shift on a regular basis.
  • Ability to wear protective clothing and equipment such as rain and snow gear, hard hat, hearing protection, respirators, boots, goggles, and gloves.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
  • State flagging card or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • First Aid/CPR card or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • A valid Washington State driver’s license (or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire) and two years of driving experience.
  • Ability to maintain safe and responsible driving that meets the city’s motor vehicle record minimum driving requirements.
  • Ability to pass position relevant pre-employment screening.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the maintenance and repair of water mains and services, sewer mains and services.
  • Cleaning roadside ditches, culverts and catch basins.
  • Repairing streets and sidewalks.
  • Grounds maintenance, including planting and trimming trees and bushes, mowing grass, weeding flower beds and lawns, and spreading beauty bark.
  • Performing public restroom cleaning, garbage pickup, and cleaning of streets and sidewalks.
  • Operating street sweepers.
  • Operating various mowers, trimmers, blowers, wood chippers, and small trucks with trailers.
  • Pressure washing sidewalks and slabs.
  • Performing water meter reading.
  • May support in leading part-time, temporary, or intern personnel within the division.
  • Maintaining punctual and reliable attendance.
