About The Position

Under close supervision, performs manual labor and assists Operations and Maintenance staff with cleaning, inspection, maintenance, and general support of wastewater treatment facilities, lift stations, odor control stations, and related equipment. Performs work using hand tools and small equipment and learns basic wastewater processes, equipment, and safe work practices.

Requirements

  • Must be eighteen (18) or older at the time of hire.
  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least 6 (six) months experience performing manual labor in, construction, utilities, industrial or facility maintenance, mechanical work, landscaping, or similar hands-on work.
  • Must possess or obtain a valid Washington State driver's license within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience/exposure in Wastewater, water, utilities, public works, is preferred but not required.
  • Traffic Control (Flagging)
  • Confined Space Entry Certifications.
  • Washington State CPR/First Aid Certificate
  • A Washington State Wastewater Treatment Plant Group I license is desired.
  • Availability and ability to work standby shifts with a callback on a 24-hour basis when assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Operators, Maintenance staff, and other employees with manual work, cleaning, repairs, maintenance, and projects throughout wastewater facilities.
  • Assist with routine lift station checks, including checking the general condition of wet wells and dry wells, pumps, alarms, chemical levels, and housekeeping.
  • Under close supervision and training, may operate trucks and light equipment to assist at the worksite.
  • Assist in controlling traffic at worksites by setting up warning signs and flagging traffic through work areas.
  • Assist with inventory, vehicle and tool organization, grounds maintenance, vegetation control, pressure washing, and cleaning of equipment and work areas.
  • Performs meter, MXU and meter box maintenance and installations.
  • Assist with construction, repair, installation, cleaning, and maintenance of lift stations, odor control stations, and treatment plant equipment at the WWTP and ESTP.
  • Assist with repair, installation, cleaning, and maintenance of wastewater piping, pumps, valves, tanks, basins, clarifiers, and other related equipment under the direction of Operations or Maintenance staff.
  • Performs support duties during confined space entries and emergency repairs after receiving required training.
  • May serve as an attendant, entrant, or support person as assigned and qualified.
  • Performs routine lift station and odor control station checks and reports unusual equipment conditions, alarms, leaks, odors, or other problems to Operations staff.
  • Assist qualified staff with chemical deliveries, transfers, and mixing as needed for wastewater treatment processes while following established safety procedures and PPE requirements.
  • Purchases tools and materials as needed.
  • Performs janitorial and general housekeeping duties at the WWTP, ESTP, lift stations, odor control stations, and treatment process areas.
  • Assists with cleaning wastewater process equipment and areas such as screens, channels, tanks, clarifiers, wet wells, pumps, and related equipment.
  • Under the direction of certified Operators, assist with routine plant checks and basic process observations and reports abnormal conditions.
  • Assist with taking tanks, basins, clarifiers, pumps, and other equipment out of service for cleaning, inspection, or maintenance.
  • Assist with wastewater sampling when directed and trained.
  • Follows established safety procedures including PPE, lockout/tagout, confined space, fall protection, chemical handling, and traffic control.
  • Regular attendance is an essential requirement.
  • Performs related work as assigned or required.
