About The Position

The Seasonal Traffic and Signals Laborer performs a variety of manual labor and maintenance activities in support of the City's street and right-of-way operations. This position assists with street maintenance, traffic control, asphalt and concrete repairs, vegetation management, litter and debris removal, and other seasonal Public Works activities. The Seasonal Traffic and Signals Laborer works as part of a team to maintain safe, clean, and functional public infrastructure while providing excellent service to the community.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of basic construction, maintenance, and safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of proper use of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of basic traffic control and work zone safety practices.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and light equipment.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Basic problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, climbing, and prolonged standing or walking.
  • Ability to work safely in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to walk, stand, or work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
  • Frequently climb ladders, steps, and equipment; enter and exit vehicles and equipment regularly.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds regularly, and up to 100 pounds occasionally, with or without assistance as needed.
  • Ability to perform sustained physical labor in outdoor environments for extended periods (8–12 hours), including during inclement weather and emergency response.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to operate tools, equipment, and vehicle controls with precision and safety.
  • Ability to complete fine motor tasks.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach overhead and below waist level, and maintain awkward positions when performing work tasks.
  • Adequate visual acuity to read instruments, inspect work areas and monitor traffic and jobsite conditions.
  • Ability to monitor surroundings and equipment operation.
  • Ability to hear warning signals, verbal instructions, and equipment sounds in noisy environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in construction, landscaping, public works, maintenance, or related manual labor.
  • Experience operating hand tools, power tools, or light equipment.
  • Experience working around traffic control or construction zones.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with installation, maintenance, and replacement of traffic signs, posts, and related hardware.
  • Assist with pavement marking activities including striping, crosswalks, legends, symbols, and curb painting.
  • Support maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment, cabinets, pedestrian push buttons, and related infrastructure under the direction of qualified personnel.
  • Install, remove, and maintain temporary traffic control devices, including cones, barricades, and signage for work zones.
  • Load, unload, transport, and organize tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, pressure washers, striping equipment, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Perform routine inspections of signs, pavement markings, and traffic control devices to identify maintenance needs.
  • Maintain vehicles, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Follow all City safety policies, traffic control procedures, and OSHA requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and the public.
  • Respond professionally to questions from the public while working in neighborhoods and roadways.
  • Perform related duties and special projects as assigned.
