About The Position

This position performs manual duties related to loading and unloading barges, primarily involving staging cargo and assisting machine operators. The role requires performing various tasks on barges and in the yard/terminal service areas, including lashing and unlashing cargo, operating vehicles, and maintaining general housekeeping within the assigned work area. Laborers may also be involved in driving positions and assisting with other operational tasks as needed.

Requirements

Valid Driver's license required.
Able to safely operate various vehicles and equipment.
High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Sufficient verbal, reading and writing skills as necessitated by the job (e.g., reading signs, labels, communicating with co-workers, completing damage reports).
Completed three (3) months as a Laborer II and/or meets all other requirements to become Laborer I.
Must be able to read labels, safety warnings and guidelines, and reefer charts.
Must be attentive to detail and alert at all times to ensure safety.
Must be able to receive and follow instructions and communicate with co-workers.
Must have corrected vision, depth perception, and wide field of vision as required to obtain a driver's license and operate power-operated vehicles under OSHA Standard 1917.27(a)(2).
Duties require good eyesight and alertness due to constant movement and heavy traffic flow of vehicles.

Completed three (3) months as a Laborer II.

Responsibilities

Lash and unlash autos, PODs, and any straight loads on platforms and flatracks.
Perform all manual duties of loading and unloading barges.
Lash and unlash containers and various types of cargo such as RORO equipment, trailers, construction equipment, etc. on barge using securing gear.
Cone and de-cone containers, platforms, and flatracks at designated coning stations.
Operate, load and drive autos and various types of equipment and vehicles on and off barge.
Wedge block all autos and RORO.
Ballast Barge (NI only).
Plug /Unplug all reefers (NI only).
Perform general housekeeping within assigned work area.
Use hand signals to assist other workers to maneuver cargo.
Operate vehicles on highway and company property.
Provide relief for Machine Operator (MO) roles based on qualifications up to and including Hustler.
Operate equipment up to the 20-ton machine in Lanai and Molokai ports (shoreside only in Molokai).
Rotate into driving positions when work opportunities arise.
Be assigned to coning stations as needed (minimum of 2 Laborers per station when coning is performed in Honolulu, Kauai, Maui, Kawaihae and Hilo).
Perform work away from the barge ramp, including driving, lashing and unlashing cargo, and MO assist on the pier.
Perform other duties within the classification.
