About The Position

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Laboratory Technologist, located within the Bacteriology Lab of the Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences Department. The primary purpose of this position is to perform routine diagnostic and research laboratory procedures under close supervision, supporting the isolation, identification, and susceptibility testing of bacterial and fungal organisms from animal specimens submitted to the Bacteriology/Mycology laboratory. This position emphasizes skill development, adherence to standard operating procedures, accurate documentation, and progressive competency development within a clinical diagnostic laboratory environment. Following the 6-month probationary period, this position will be required to be on a rotation schedule for working Saturday mornings and university holidays.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.
  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or another laboratory science
  • Minimum Experience: Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures (for Laboratory Technologist 1)
  • Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of basic microbiology laboratory principles, Skill in following detailed procedures accurately, Ability to learn new laboratory techniques and systems (for Laboratory Technologist 1)
  • Minimum Experience: 2 years of relevant experience (for Laboratory Technologist 2)
  • Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of routine diagnostic microbiology methods, Skill in interpreting standard test results and recognizing deviations, Ability to exercise judgment within established protocols (for Laboratory Technologist 2)
  • Minimum Experience: 4 years of relevant experience (for Senior Laboratory Technologist 1)
  • Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Advanced knowledge of diagnostic microbiology and susceptibility testing, Skill in troubleshooting complex testing and equipment issues, Ability to train others and provide technical guidance (for Senior Laboratory Technologist 1)
  • Minimum Experience: 6 years of relevant experience (for Senior Laboratory Technologist 2)
  • Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Expert knowledge of diagnostic microbiology and laboratory quality systems, Skill in supervising technical work and developing procedures, Ability to lead laboratory functions, instruct learners, and support operational decision-making (for Senior Laboratory Technologist 2)

Responsibilities

  • Learns and performs sample set up for routine microbiology cultures
  • Evaluates cultures for the presence of bacteria
  • Provides identification of bacterial and fungal pathogens
  • Performs gram staining and interpretation
  • Documents results on laboratory worksheets and enters results in hospital computer system
  • Performs antimicrobial susceptibility test
  • Communicates with clinicians, staff, and students as needed
  • Participates in quality control activities related to testing
  • Supports laboratory staff in preparing protocols
  • Maintains laboratory equipment
  • Assists with biohazard disposal/cleaning and autoclaving
  • Prepares culture media
  • Participates in research and scholarly activities
