About The Position

The Laboratory Technician provides clinical laboratory testing, specimen collection, diagnostic support, laboratory operations, and quality assurance services for the Ascension Island medical clinic under the V2X program. The incumbent supports routine, emergency, and after-hours laboratory services required to maintain operational medical capability for the Ascension Auxiliary Airfield (AAAF) mission within a remote and austere operational environment. The Laboratory Technician performs laboratory testing and supports laboratory accreditation, inspection readiness, quality control, and operational compliance in accordance with applicable Department of Defense (DoD), Air Force, CLIP, CAP, COLA, and V2X standards and operational requirements.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related laboratory field required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience supporting clinical laboratory operations, diagnostic testing, and emergency laboratory services preferred.
  • Experience supporting remote, overseas, military, or austere operational environments preferred.
  • Prior experience supporting government healthcare contracts or operational medicine environments preferred.
  • Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Technologist (MT), or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by ASCP, AMT, or equivalent recognized certifying body preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
  • Must maintain all required certifications, licenses, continuing education, and credentialing requirements for the duration of employment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory operations, specimen handling, diagnostic testing, and laboratory quality assurance procedures.
  • Familiarity with CLIP, CAP, COLA, AFI 44-102, and applicable laboratory operational standards.
  • Ability to perform laboratory testing accurately and efficiently within a remote operational environment.
  • Knowledge of biosafety, infection prevention, hazardous material handling, and medical waste management procedures.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory equipment, quality control records, and operational documentation.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to function effectively during emergency response and contingency operations.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems and healthcare administrative applications preferred.
  • Ability to work in laboratory, clinic, and operational healthcare environments.
  • Capability to function effectively within remote or austere island conditions.
  • Ability to respond to after-hours laboratory emergencies and operational contingencies as required.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and safely handle laboratory specimens, chemicals, and medical equipment.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with biosafety requirements.
  • Must meet all medical, security, credentialing, and deployment requirements per contract and V2X policy.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required access credentials and base access authorization.
  • Valid passport and ability to travel internationally as required.
  • Ability to comply with all Ascension Island operational, environmental, and safety requirements.
  • Must maintain professional conduct, laboratory readiness, and operational readiness standards required for overseas contingency operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory testing, specimen collection, blood analysis, diagnostic support, and laboratory procedures in support of clinic operations and emergency medical response activities.
  • Support laboratory operations in accordance with AFI 44-102, DoD Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (CLIP) standards, and applicable laboratory accreditation requirements.
  • Maintain readiness to provide laboratory support during routine clinic operations and after-hours medical emergencies requiring life or limb-saving laboratory testing.
  • Perform laboratory testing included within the approved Ascension Laboratory Menu and support operational medical requirements.
  • Conduct blood chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, microbiology, blood bank, infectious disease, and related laboratory testing as authorized by laboratory capability and operational requirements.
  • Support Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) and breathalyzer testing for fit-for-duty administrative determinations in accordance with established procedures and regulations.
  • Assist with laboratory quality assurance, proficiency testing, quality control, and inspection readiness activities.
  • Support maintenance of laboratory accreditation and CLIP certification requirements.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained, calibrated, operational, and compliant with applicable standards and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintain laboratory records, specimen tracking, operational documentation, and testing logs in accordance with applicable standards and privacy requirements.
  • Coordinate with providers, paramedics, pathologists, external laboratories, and medical leadership to support continuity of patient care and operational medical readiness.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness planning, contingency operations, and mass casualty response activities as required.
  • Support collection and handling procedures for drug testing programs in accordance with DAFMAN 44-197 and applicable requirements.
  • Support infection prevention, biosafety, hazardous material handling, and medical waste management procedures in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Maintain all required certifications, competencies, continuing education, and operational training requirements throughout employment.
