About The Position

This position performs daily tasks necessary for the successful operation of a research animal vivarium. Responsibilities include provision of daily husbandry care, giving medical treatments to animals, setting up breeding colonies, handling biohazards in BSL1, BSL2, and BSL3 animal rooms, and daily oversight of the Quarantine area. Specific duties vary slightly between the Technician 1, 2, and 3 levels, with higher levels involving more complex tasks such as assuming responsibilities of the vivarium supervisor as needed and performing specialized medical treatments, procedures, or tests.

Requirements

  • Two years of general laboratory experience (Laboratory Technician 1).
  • One year of experience as a laboratory technician (Laboratory Technician 2).
  • Two years of experience as a laboratory technician (Laboratory Technician 3).
  • An associate or bachelor's degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science (Laboratory Technician 1, 2, and 3).
  • Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory or medical laboratory technology program (Laboratory Technician 1).
  • Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (Laboratory Technician 1, 2, and 3).
  • An associate or bachelor's degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science plus one year of experience as a laboratory technician (Laboratory Technician 3).
  • Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science plus one year of experience as a laboratory technician (Laboratory Technician 3).
  • Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (Laboratory Technician 3).
  • Valid U.S. work authorization at the time of hire and throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience substituting for every six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in any of the biological, physical, chemical, or agricultural sciences will substitute for one year of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily husbandry care for laboratory animals.
  • Administer medical treatments to animals.
  • Set up and maintain breeding colonies.
  • Handle biohazards in BSL1, BSL2, and BSL3 animal rooms.
  • Provide daily oversight of the Quarantine area.
  • Dispose of animal carcasses properly.
  • Trim and maintain animal teeth.
  • Observe animals and document abnormalities.
  • Maintain animal charts, records, and identification cards.
  • Handle and restrain animals using proper techniques.
  • Understand animal procurement, receiving, and shipping.
  • Implement biosecurity standards to minimize cross-contamination.
  • Manage the cross-fostering program.
  • Perform euthanasia procedures when requested.
  • Clean, prepare, and sterilize surgical instruments.
  • Maintain cleanliness of assigned areas, including sanitizing floors and rooms.
  • Operate and maintain cage washing machines and other sanitizing equipment.
  • Relocate animals to clean cages and sanitize used cages.
  • Regulate feeding and watering of animals according to specific diets and requirements.
  • Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) and security control measures.
  • Assist the Laboratory Technician Supervisor with standard operating procedures.
  • Receive, install, and maintain CO2 and oxygen cylinders.
  • Supervise employees and assist investigators when the supervisor is unavailable (Technician 3 only).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
