About The Position

This class is responsible for performing routine chemical and biological tests in a water and wastewater treatment plant laboratory. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, collecting samples from various sources within the water and wastewater facilities, distribution system, customer homes, and PWC Farm; conducting field analysis as needed; performing various chemical/biological tests; preparing sample collection vials/containers; maintaining laboratory equipment in working order; inputting a variety of data; maintaining records, logs, and chain-of-custody for reports; reporting on visual appearance of samples; following all laws/regulations/policies/procedures related to laboratory operations, water/wastewater treatment, and industrial pretreatment; performing certified parameter analysis according to Standard Operating Procedures and evaluating/interpreting data which is subject to random test sampling by the State of NC; performing auditable mathematical/statistical calculations in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures; interpreting and following established guidelines for quality control/assurance techniques; entering data into laboratory LIMS system and state LDS system within acceptable time frames; creating/compiling reports for disinfection of new mains and customer complaint reports; identifying and troubleshooting possible issues with sampling stations; resolving customer issues pertaining to water/wastewater; organizing routine work and properly evaluating and interpreting data accordingly so all water quality standards are met; following SDS requirements as noted for all hazardous chemicals and waste disposal; performing related duties as assigned, such as special project analysis, reporting, and state/federal updates; driving/operating vehicles in performing work assignments/responsibilities. Operating under general supervision of the W/R Laboratory Supervisor, work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures. Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures, as appropriate.
  • Good knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, materials, and equipment used in water/wastewater analysis.
  • Working knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to laboratory operations/water/wastewater treatment.
  • Skill in collecting samples.
  • Skill in using/operating computers and applicable software.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Ability to perform accurate mathematical computations.
  • Ability to read/interpret technical guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, and all levels of employees.
  • Graduation from an accredited two (2) year college or technical institute with a degree/certification in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or related field; OR Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of four (4) years of experience collecting field samples, and preparing laboratory samples; OR An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as defined in (A) and (B) above.
