About The Position

The Spanish Fork branch of the UVDL is looking for a laboratory technician to run diagnostic tests for a variety of animal species. This laboratory is small, and each employee contributes to all sections. We are looking for an energetic individual who works well with others, is adaptable, and is willing to perform tasks that require some lifting or are sometimes unpleasant. On busy days, standing for extended periods of time may be required. The ideal candidate will actively seek opportunities to help others, be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to multitask. This individual will need the ability to prioritize tasks and organize the workday so that all work gets done.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform serologic-based assays such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA).
  • Experience performing routine microbiologic procedures such as gram stains and bacterial culture for isolation and identification.
  • Experience working under biosafety I and II conditions.
  • Ability to work with animal tissues, feces, urine, etc.
  • Functional in MS Word and Excel.
  • Experience working within a quality management system.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • Self-starter.

Responsibilities

  • Help with animal unloading and in performing necropsies (animal postmortem examinations).
  • Keep the necropsy area clean and tidy.
  • Assist with private cremations including cremains processing.
  • Serve as back-up technician for serology and microbiology sections.
  • Answer phone and direct phone calls as needed.
  • Assist with storage of old cases and logbooks.
  • Accession new cases and enter test results of current cases into the laboratory’s information management system.
  • Greet clients and assist them in filling out submission forms.
  • Participate in the laboratory’s quality system.
  • Fill pipette tip dispensers, wash glassware, and ensure general laboratory cleanliness.
  • Centrifuge blood samples to separate serum and plasma from blood cells.
  • Back-up for serology, bacteriology, and molecular sections
  • Use Microsoft Word and Excel.
