About The Position

The Department of Pathology is seeking a Laboratory Technician III to direct the operation of difficult and complex technical duties in a clinical laboratory related to specimen processing, perform computer/clerical duties, telephone inquiries, routine laboratory maintenance and supply distribution, and provide functional supervision over laboratory personnel. This position will be Monday – Friday from 0800-1700. The Department of Pathology is part of UI Health Care, a comprehensive health sciences center that serves Iowa and the region, as well as patients referred from the United States and overseas. The Clinical Laboratories are well recognized for providing outstanding and comprehensive care to the patients we serve. The breadth and depth of services provided are amongst the best in the country. The educational programs that the department participates in includes medical students, clinical laboratory scientists as well as biomedical scientists.

Requirements

  • Three years of laboratory experience including one year as Laboratory Technician II or equivalent level experience
  • Certification as a Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA) and one year of Laboratory experience
  • Any combination of related post high school education and experience which totals three years
  • Two years of technical schooling required for certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

Nice To Haves

  • Anatomic Pathology Laboratory experience preferred.
  • MLA(ASCP) certification or eligible.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with EPIC Beaker Laboratory Information System.
  • Experience providing functional supervision is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and performs the pre-analytical processes including receipt, data entry, labeling, and processing of Anatomic Pathology specimens.
  • Reviews variance and root cause analysis reports, as directed by the SP Laboratory Supervisor, assists with development and implementation of corrective action plans.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and monitors equipment performance, diagnoses problems and makes repairs or initiates service requests.
  • Participates in the review, revision and implementation of existing standard operating procedures, as well as, participates in the design and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation. Includes developing and executing validation plans for equipment and testing materials.
  • In collaboration with the SP Laboratory Supervisor, provides direct supervision of laboratory personnel.
