About The Position

The Laboratory Technician I is responsible for specimen processing, data entry and documentation, and customer service within the laboratory. This role involves receiving, verifying, and accessioning pathology specimens, ensuring proper labeling and requisition information, and entering data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS). The technician will also communicate with various stakeholders regarding specimen status and requirements, and assist with administrative duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience.
  • Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

  • Previous healthcare, laboratory, pathology, or specimen-processing experience preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory information systems and electronic medical records preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, verify, and accession pathology specimens.
  • Ensure all specimens are properly labeled and accompanied by complete requisition information.
  • Assign accession numbers and enter patient and specimen information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Verify specimen identity and resolve discrepancies according to established procedures.
  • Maintain specimen tracking throughout the testing process.
  • Accurately enter patient demographics, physician information, specimen information and clinical history into the LIS.
  • Review requisitions for completeness and compliance with laboratory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory standards.
  • Generate reports, labels, and specimen tracking documentation as needed.
  • Communicate professionally with providers, clinic staff, couriers, and laboratory personnel regarding specimen requirements and status.
  • Assist with resolving specimen-related inquiries and discrepancies.
  • Assist with filing, scanning, and archiving pathology reports and records.
  • Support laboratory quality, performance improvement, and accreditation activities.
  • Crosstrain in other laboratory administrative or support functions as needed.
  • Perform special projects and other duties assigned by leadership.
