About The Position

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) is seeking a Laboratory Technician 2 for the Central Receiving section of the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL). ADDL is Ohio's state animal health laboratory, responsible for diagnostic testing to protect animal health. Central Receiving manages all incoming mail and clinical samples, including verifying documentation, accessioning them into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and routing them to the appropriate testing sections. This role is crucial for ensuring the safety and accuracy of diagnostic processes within the state's agricultural sector. The ODA campus is located in Reynoldsburg on 158 acres, offering free parking and frequent food trucks. The agency is committed to strengthening Ohio through its 19 divisions and programs, ensuring the safety of consumed products, protecting farmland, improving soil and water quality, and keeping plants, crops, and animals free of pests and disease. ODA also houses the state's top food safety laboratory and oversees weights and measures accuracy standards and county and independent fairs.

Requirements

Formal education in arithmetic that included fractions, decimals & percentages & reading, writing & speaking English.
3 courses in high school science (e.g., biology, chemistry, geology, microbiology) which included laboratory testing & use & maintenance of laboratory equipment OR 12 months experience in science laboratory preparing specimens & samples for testing, preparing reagents &/or conducting basic/routine laboratory tests.
OR 12 months experience as Laboratory Technician 1, 86111.
OR equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Responsibilities

Receives and processes clinical samples, including blood, serum, urine, tissue, swabs, oral fluids, abortion samples, and rabies suspect samples.
Uses computer and LIMS for accessioning daily submissions to the ADDL.
Participates in the day-to-day operations of the Central Receiving lab section.
Opens mail and verifies that submission forms contain required information.
Confirms sample identification, matching paperwork to samples.
Inputs submission information into the LIMS.
Scans submission forms and attaches them to each LIMS case.
Prints case labels and applies them to samples and submission forms.
Answers telephone calls and responds to email correspondence from clients.
Organizes and assigns identification numbers to samples.
Organizes test tube racks and trays.
Participates in on-call rotation with other lab staff.
Provides excellent customer service to external and internal customers.
Trains staff in sample receipt and accessioning procedures.
Assists with daily upkeep of the assigned laboratory section and associated equipment (computer, scanner, barcode readers, refrigerators).
Participates in the laboratory’s biosafety and Quality Management System.
Cleans and disinfects work area.
Maintains work area supplies and equipment.
Performs general housekeeping tasks of laboratory sinks, benches, and other laboratory areas.
Orders supplies.
Files archived submission records and participates in laboratory digitization efforts.
Assists laboratory personnel and independently conducts elementary laboratory test procedures (e.g., preparing reagents, outlining testing procedures, visually evaluating test systems).
Prepares specimens for storage and ships specimens to other laboratories for additional testing.
Attends and participates in staff meetings, conferences, and activities.
Responds to internal and external correspondence.
Performs other duties as assigned.
