About The Position

You will play an important role in a dynamic and passionate team, supporting a variety of projects across the environment, transportation, materials, buildings, renewable energy, hydroelectricity, and climate change markets. As Laboratory Supervisor, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the materials testing laboratory, including staff supervision, sample management, testing quality, equipment calibration, reporting, turnaround times, and compliance with applicable standards and accreditation requirements. Requirements

  • Completion of a provincially recognized three-year Technician or Technologist program is required;
  • C.Tech., C.E.T., or eligibility to obtain designation is required;
  • Minimum of four years of experience in laboratory materials testing is required;
  • Minimum of two years of experience supervising laboratory operations or technical staff is required;
  • Experience with CCIL-accredited laboratory operations is required;
  • Valid CCIL/CSA certifications, or eligibility to obtain them, are required;
  • Strong understanding of ASTM, CCIL, CSA, MTO, AASHTO, and other specifications and standards related to soil, aggregate, concrete, and rock testing;
  • Ability to lift and handle samples up to 25 kg on a regular basis;
  • Valid driver’s licence is required;
  • Eligibility to obtain security clearance is required;
  • Strong technical writing skills and the ability to present information clearly and concisely;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities, staff, samples, deadlines, and reporting requirements;
  • Understanding of civil engineering, construction, laboratory quality systems, and occupational health and safety requirements;
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices, quality control, and continuous improvement.

  • P.Eng. designation is considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Supervising, mentoring, and coordinating laboratory and field technicians/technologists;
  • Managing daily laboratory operations, including sample flow, testing priorities, scheduling, workload planning, and turnaround times;
  • Overseeing and conducting laboratory testing, including but not limited to compressive strength testing of concrete, soil and aggregate gradation, hydrometer analysis, Atterberg limits, Proctor testing, consolidation testing, Swedish fall cone testing, shear strength testing, UCS testing of rock cores, and other materials testing as required;
  • Ensuring testing is completed in accordance with applicable CCIL, CSA, ASTM, MTO, AASHTO, and project-specific requirements;
  • Maintaining accurate sample logs for concrete cylinders, aggregate samples, soil samples, and rock samples;
  • Reviewing and verifying test data, calculations, worksheets, factual reports, summaries, data sheets, and graphs prior to submission;
  • Overseeing the quality of work completed by field and laboratory staff, including data verification, quality checks, and work process audits;
  • Supporting laboratory accreditation, proficiency testing, correlation programs, audits, and CCIL assessments;
  • Maintaining laboratory records, including calibration certificates, registration certificates, equipment manuals, applicable standards, and quality documentation;
  • Coordinating communication between clients, project managers, field staff, laboratory technicians, and management;
  • Assisting with technician scheduling, utilization tracking, timesheet review, and resource planning;
  • Assisting with laboratory budgeting, invoicing, accounts payable/receivable, and financial tracking for laboratory services;
  • Ensuring laboratory equipment is maintained, calibrated, and in proper working condition;
  • Routinely inspecting the laboratory and work areas to maintain safe, clean, and efficient working conditions;
  • Training field and laboratory staff on testing procedures, quality requirements, equipment use, documentation, and health and safety practices;
  • Identifying opportunities to improve laboratory efficiency, quality control, and work processes;
  • Supporting business development and assisting with the preparation of materials testing quotations and proposals, as required;
  • Applying and promoting Englobe’s health and safety rules and safe work practices.
