About The Position

This position is responsible for managing and operating a small-scale helium gas collection and liquefaction system to produce and supply liquid helium for research groups within the Department of Physics. The role involves scheduling production runs, monitoring usage rates, and managing the procurement of liquid helium. Additionally, the technician will operate and maintain a liquid nitrogen weigh scale system, manage liquid nitrogen procurement and billings, and participate in the management of capitalized assets and equipment surplus processes. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of work experience required.
  • Lifting objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Climbing on ladders.
  • Operating pallet jacks, carts, and other simple material handling tools.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Mastery of basic hand tools, power tools, and electronic diagnostic equipment such as multimeters and oscilloscopes.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate a small-scale helium collection and liquefaction system.
  • Ability to accurately and consistently gather and interpret data related to helium system production rate, consumption rate by research end users, and procurement data and pricing trends.
  • Ability to synthesize system data and formulate and execute a rational production plan for helium gas recovery and reliquefication.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and to efficiently engage external repair service providers.
  • Must possess, or be willing and able to obtain, a basic understanding of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams/Schematics and Functional Descriptions describing the Department's cryogenic systems and processes.

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related area desired.
  • Four years of work experience desired.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule production runs and monitor and calculate usage rates to ensure an adequate supply of helium.
  • Manage ordering and procurement of liquid helium to supplement usage needs.
  • Distribute liquid helium to end users by using portable storage tanks.
  • Operate and maintain liquid nitrogen weigh scale system.
  • Manage ordering and procurement of liquid nitrogen and internal/external billings.
  • Participate in management of capitalized assets and periodic audits.
  • Participate in equipment surplus process and preparation of equipment bundles.
