About The Position

Mayo Clinic is seeking a Laboratory Referral Specialist I or II to work 100% on-site in a hospital laboratory setting at a strategic client facility in Winfield, IL. This role involves managing a client’s referral send-out work to Mayo Clinic Laboratories (MCL), providing onsite customer service, and acting as a resource to the client's clinical laboratory staff. Key responsibilities include managing biological specimens from receipt to processing and shipping, ordering, and specimen resolution. The specialist will also communicate with internal and external stakeholders, monitor reports, and resolve issues related to specimen submissions. Duties may extend to pending lists, billing charges, Laboratory Information System (LIS) test builds, Joint Test Catalog maintenance, quality metrics, training send-out staff, and maintaining MCL supply inventory. Additional responsibilities may be assigned related to LIS maintenance, documents, and end-user feedback groups. Individuals hired must complete 2 years in this position before being eligible to apply for other Mayo Clinic positions. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or F-1 STEM OPT extension.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED and 3 years of relevant work experience (for Laboratory Referral Specialist I)
  • Bachelor degree or an associate degree with 1 year of relevant experience (for Laboratory Referral Specialist II)

  • Must be capable of multi-tasking and performing in a fast-paced and customer focused environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work closely with others is essential.
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality handling results, patient information and business interactions.
  • Organized and capable of prioritizing work with limited oversight.
  • Must possess good human relations skills and be able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Requires the ability to be attentive to details and to adhere to strict safety requirements for handling chemicals and infectious agents.

Responsibilities

  • Managing a client’s referral send-out work coming to Mayo Clinic Laboratories (MCL) as directed by client management and governed by a client’s business contract.
  • Providing onsite customer service and being a resource to a client’s clinical laboratory staff.
  • Managing the biological specimens (e.g. blood, urine) receipt, verification, handling, aliquoting, processing and shipping if applicable, ordering, and specimen resolution.
  • Communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitoring assigned reports and partnering with clients to resolve issues related to specimen submissions.
  • Managing pending lists, billing charges, Laboratory Information System (LIS) test builds, Joint Test Catalog maintenance, quality metrics and training of send-out staff, and maintaining MCL supply inventory.
  • Performing additional responsibilities as assigned by the client and MCL related to LIS maintenance, documents, and end-user feedback groups.
