About The Position

The primary goal of the Lab Manager is to support the experimental laboratories of the department. The laboratory manager is the primary teaching and research laboratories support for the department. They are critical to the operations of the laboratories by coordination, maintenance, and supervision of The Department’s stockroom infrastructure and its functions. The Lab Manager will collaborate with the instrumentation specialist, laboratory coordinators, and other relevant faculty and support staff. As the Lab Manager plays an important role in the teaching and safety mission of the department, they may also have occasional curricular and programming responsibilities that include: Teaching undergraduate chemistry courses (introductory and advanced), developing and coordinating laboratory curricula, and integrating laboratory safety programming into coursework. Developing and delivering safety training for students and faculty, ensuring alignment with EHS and departmental compliance requirements.

Requirements

  • Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.
  • Six (6) years of professional experience in one or more combination of the following: data processing, installation and maintenance of application programs, technical support, and/or design and preparation of programs.
  • OR
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.
  • OR
  • Possession of a master's degree; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of the department’s main and satellite stockrooms, serving over 1,500 students annually across chemistry lab courses that serve the entire TCNJ campus, through the preparation of approximately 30–35 lab sections per fall and spring semesters.
  • Management of a vast and wide range of chemical inventory (2,600 primary manufacturer's containers in our stockrooms and research labs– including flammable solvents, pyrophoric metals, organic and inorganic compounds, peroxides, concentrated acids and bases– as well as a large number of secondary chemical containers, chemical samples, gas cylinders, and biological materials), and stewardship of hazardous materials in compliance with EHS protocols.
  • Maintaining the department’s chemical and physical assets (excluding major instruments, office equipment, and IT).
  • Ordering, organizing, and maintaining all departmental chemicals and laboratory supplies (including those for the stockroom and teaching laboratories), and ordering chemical and laboratory supplies for research laboratories.
  • Hiring and supervising workers associated with stockroom functions.
  • Maintenance of the department’s safety data sheet (SDS) library and digital inventory tracking system..
  • Serving as one of the administrators of the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Supervision of chemical hygiene protocols and departmental compliance with federal, state, and institutional safety policies.
  • Collaborate with the instrumentation specialist, laboratory coordinators, and other relevant faculty and support staff of the department.
  • Coordination of hazardous waste stream disposal, ensuring timely pickup, required documentation, and regulatory reporting.
  • Procurement and distribution of laboratory consumables and personal protective equipment (PPE) for faculty, staff, and student researchers.
  • Support of teaching laboratories, research labs, and shared instrumentation spaces across the department.
