About The Position

The Laboratory Manager oversees shared research laboratory facilities, equipment, and operations. This role manages laboratory spaces, equipment inventory and maintenance, safety and regulatory compliance, personnel onboarding and training, and coordination of inspections and corrective actions. Working closely with the Laboratory Director and faculty, the Laboratory Manager facilitates communication across research groups and ensures efficient, compliant and well-coordinated laboratory operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of related experience in laboratory management.

Responsibilities

  • Facilities Management Oversee laboratory facilities in College Station (to include SPHB laboratories, Reynolds lab, storage spaces, and any other research-related spaces, including as spaces are added)
  • Coordinate with vendors, SSC, building management, and school administration on maintenance, repairs, and other building/facilities needs
  • Perform decommissioning of unused/changing lab spaces and equipment in coordination with lab faculty
  • Maintain shared equipment inventory and maintenance logs, troubleshoot equipment issues, and coordinate repairs.
  • Instruct laboratory personnel on the use instrumentation
  • Manage moving of equipment, including surplus items
  • Oversee shared freezer space usage; manage, maintain, and monitor temperature monitoring system
  • Develop and implement equipment standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Laboratory Safety, Compliance, and Operations Be familiar with University, Federal, and other regulatory and training requirements specific for each laboratory
  • Maintain required laboratory permitting and compliance records (biological, chemical, radiological, as applicable); ensure permit renewals are completed timely
  • Coordinate with lab faculty to ensure compliance with regulatory and training requirements
  • Oversee laboratory waste disposal to according to EHS regulations.
  • Lead orientation for new personnel (faculty, staff, postdocs, students)
  • Coordinate and accompany the University regulatory personnel (e.g. EHS, IBC, IACUC) during laboratory Inspections and audits; implement corrective actions from inspection findings
  • Verify and document required training and certifications for all personnel (faculty, staff, postdocs, students) according to facilities they will access (project-specific and lab-specific training to be completed by each lab group)
  • Conduct refresher trainings and orientations, as needed
  • Laboratory-related Communications Work closely with Laboratory Director to communicate and coordinate SPH labs spaces, activities, and needs
  • Serve as liaison to NOVA, virtual reality, lab Coordinate and liaise with laboratory faculty/PIs on lab space, equipment, and personnel matters
  • Coordinate with HR and faculty to ensure appropriate onboarding and logistics/access for new lab personnel; maintain building access permissions for lab personnel and process new requests and terminations
  • Facilitate communications between multiple PI groups; Organize, communicate, and lead group lab PI meetings
  • Work with Laboratory Director to resolve conflicts regarding space, equipment, or resource use
  • Ensure accurate reporting, as needed, on laboratory spaces and their use (e.g., SPH annual report) by collecting and maintaining information for reporting needs
  • Participate in preparation of grant proposals (e.g., maintain and prepare facilities and equipment documents)
  • Support collaborative project logistics, as needed
  • Organize and help lead lab tours
