Laboratory Engineer
About The Position
The Laboratory Engineer serves as an intermediate-level technical professional between Laboratory Technicians and Laboratory Management. This position combines advanced testing responsibilities, technical review, laboratory coordination, quality-system support, accreditation activities, and technician development across both Geotechnical and Construction Materials Engineering (CME) laboratory operations. The Laboratory Engineer is expected to perform advanced laboratory testing, verify calculations and test results, support laboratory quality initiatives, assist with technician training, and help maintain accreditation requirements while developing expertise across all laboratory disciplines. This position does not function as a Laboratory Manager but serves as a senior technical resource and future leadership candidate within the laboratory organization.
Requirements
- SB101 certification (within one year of employment)
- SB201 certification (within one year of employment)
- SB202 certification (within one year of employment)
- AGG101 certification (within one year of employment)
- Asphalt Level 1A certification (within one year of employment)
- Asphalt Level 2 certification (within one year of employment)
- ACI Strength certification (within one year of employment)
- Proficiency in all accredited Geotechnical laboratory procedures.
- Proficiency in all accredited Construction Materials Engineering laboratory procedures.
- Understanding of testing theory, calculations, and limitations of test results.
- Competency in quality-system administration and accreditation requirements.
- Assistance with implementation of expanded rock testing capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Perform standard and advanced laboratory testing in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, TxDOT, and applicable industry standards.
- Conduct and interpret testing for: Soils, Aggregate Materials, Concrete, Asphalt, Rock Materials, Other accredited laboratory services.
- Perform calculations, data reduction, and technical review of laboratory test results.
- Verify accuracy and validity of testing data before final submission.
- Assist engineers and project managers with interpretation of laboratory findings.
- Identify testing anomalies and coordinate corrective actions when required.
- Support expansion of laboratory capabilities, including rock testing services.
- Assist the Quality Manager in maintaining laboratory accreditation requirements.
- Support calibration and preventative maintenance programs for laboratory equipment.
- Maintain quality records, training records, and competency documentation.
- Assist with proficiency sample programs, corrective actions, and compliance requirements.
- Participate in internal and external laboratory audits.
- Assist in implementation of quality assurance and quality control procedures.
- Support preparation for accreditation assessments and client audits.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to laboratory technicians.
- Assist with technician training and cross-training initiatives.
- Help coordinate testing priorities and laboratory workflow.
- Support review of laboratory reports, data packages, and test documentation.
- Assist laboratory management in maintaining efficient laboratory operations.
- Promote safe work practices and compliance with company procedures.
