About The Position

The Diagnostic Development and Integration (DD&I) Group at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), University of Rochester, is seeking a Laboratory Engineer to support the development and operation of advanced nuclear diagnostic instrumentation for use in the Omega Laser Facility. The DD&I Group collaborates with scientists on hundreds of sophisticated experiments per year on the various laser systems at the laboratory. The successful candidate will interface directly with scientists, engineers, and technicians throughout LLE, as with external visiting scientists. The position requires solid scientific, laboratory, organizational, and computational skills, as well as the ability to work independently and communicate effectively. The successful candidate will lead development efforts, including project management, for new instruments to enable LLE’s long-term scientific mission and support the operation and maintenance of the existing scientific instrumentation. In addition, the candidate will manage scheduling and conflict management for nuclear diagnostic systems and advises DD&I group lead on readiness and scheduling-related concerns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of relevant experience required Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to work in a cleanroom environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • High degree of manual dexterity
  • Strong interpersonal skills working in a team-based environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn additional software as needed
  • Ability to qualify as a NYS Radiological Worker (certification provided at LLE)
  • Applicants should possess a technical background, with experience working with optical, electrical, and/or mechanical systems including vacuum and pressurized gas systems.
  • DOE Q-Cleared or ability to obtain Q clearance
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical schematics
  • Technical writing experience
  • Familiarity with nuclear spectroscopy equipment (e.g. Scintillators, Photomultiplier tubes) and high-speed electronic data acquisition.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering services in support of engineering and physical science research activities.
  • Performs professional engineering work involving the solution of engineering problems and/or the design of specialized equipment and instrument systems.
  • Develops assigned aspects of an investigation, plans experimental procedures, evaluates and validates data, and reports findings, applying a wide breadth and depth of theoretical and practical knowledge, scientific and engineering insight, and the ability to predict results from theoretical knowledge.
  • Troubleshoots and services commercial, in house built, and/or test equipment.
  • May fabricate and/or supervise fabrication of equipment.
  • May assist in selection and purchase of components.
  • Consults with other engineering and research specialists.
  • Keeps abreast of state-of-the-art advances.
  • Maintains contact with vendors.
  • May supervise staff assisting in experiments.
  • May support classroom and laboratory teaching activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
