About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant will assist with the required processing of laboratory specimens including but not limited to verification of specimen identification, centrifugation, and pouring of aliquots. They will also maintain specified equipment, instruments, and supplies, and perform certain routine laboratory procedures and operate specified laboratory instruments and equipment. Additionally, the role involves performing a variety of clerical and technical procedures to prepare specimens for processing, result review, and verification, answering phones, and providing test information over the phone. The assistant will check inventory of supplies, notify the supervisor when ordering may be necessary, and maintain work areas in a neat, clean, and orderly manner. Operation of a computer for required applications is also part of the role, along with complying with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies and adhering to established hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. The position may require performing other similar or related duties as required or as directed in all sections, areas, and shifts, and working closely with technical and clerical staff to maintain communication related to patient tests/processing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have good organizational skills.
  • Able to work independently on assigned tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Six months of laboratory experience preferred.

  • Follows hospital and department policies with special attention to safety, dress, attendance and punctuality, and display of ID badge.
  • Subscribes to hospital’s mission statement, code of ethics, and standards of conduct.
  • Handles all work-related information in a confidential manner, as outlined in Confidentiality Policy.
  • Recognizes and respects each patient’s right to privacy, and understands that this is protected by statute. Understands that looking up patient information not needed for job duties is prohibited and may be grounds for immediate dismissal.
  • Demonstrates initiative and creativity to continuously improve services, departmental and interdepartmental processes, and any other activities that affect quality.
  • Plans, organizes, and renders care for (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric) patients within an assigned area.
  • Performs work responsibilities while staying in compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Understands and agrees to uphold the Hospital Compliance Plan.
  • Adheres to Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control plan including consistent use of safety devices as designed to prevent sharp injuries.
